Description
The referee took out a two-sided chip and flipped it in the air. It came up green, and Malia had the choice of position or to defer until the third. She looked quickly at her coach, who told her to defer. Malia crossed her forearms, making an ‘X’ and deferring to me. So far Malia hadn’t overwhelmed me. I faced my hand downward, choosing the bottom position to start the second, leading 2-0.
As the defensive wrestler, it was my job to earn an escape, or a reversal. I got down on my hands and knees and bridged them over the starting lines. Malia approached from my left, put her knee down and grabbed my left elbow, and finally wrapped her right arm around my midsection. The referee was satisfied, and blew his whistle to start the second.
I was careful at first to not over-do my escape attempts, feeling out Malia’s strategy. She seemed content to simply stay on my back rather than work for a fall.
