If you want to get the most out of your tablet I suggest looking into getting Photoshop or the full version of Painter - you can get some amazing results. I'll steer you towards an artist I admire to see what digital art can really be - She has a cartoony style as well, and her digital painting skills are superb. You might enjoy her work.
I really love your drawings of people, I'm trying to work towards a similar style. I've come from an anime background... Trying to branch away from it now.

I always like the speckliness of crayons and pastels and colored pencils just a little more than computer gradients.
