Description
Finally, a mecha submission. I have 4 more in this series in the works but I keep getting stalled on design aspects among other distractions. Funnily enough, this design came from a quick sketch I did when trying to finish off another design. Expected are the VT Visahnthii, VT Velkhanii (full body), VT Vehnahn & the VT (name yet to be decided)The VT Vaugahn is a Ground Superiority mech and the largest automated armor short of a Multi-Limb Battleship(mobile armor) that NAI deploys. The Vaugahn was designed as an answer to the MDG Phantom. While the Phantom can effectively cloak, the Vaugahn took a different approach and it's key ability is to see through battlefield scatter jamming and relay it's vision to otherwise blinded friendly units in range for coordinated actions. Though no weapons are visible in this image, there are two binders on the back that can hold a variety of weapons usable only by the NAI. The thing between the legs would be a flag or a banner used mainly for display when in a city.

Seemingly Five Star Storie's inspired, nicely done.

Well, I'm trying to create a Mecha tutorial so that might help in future but it'll be a while for now before its done so in the time being, do you have any specific questions? Mecha in general is such a large topic that its hard to narrow down some basic advice : )

well since im trying to draw a mecha, i was hoping you would tell me something, that you might think is good to know before drawing one; well to put it in better words, what should i keep in mind when drawing one?

I would have to say, focus your detail on one or two points. I tend to focus on the head since it generally conveys the overall soul of the mech so to speak. Past that, I tend to focus on theme and pose. A pose can be the difference between an intimidating design or something that might be considered boring or cute. For theme, I generally try to have similar looking peices such as shin and arm guards. I like a shoulder that seems to grow from the chest as opposed to blocky pads (though I will use them from time to time). For the most part, try tracing or copying another artists design as you will start to notice little details that otherwise blend in and get missed. After that, try making a few mods to another design and after a while, you start to get a feel for what you like and don't like, eventually developing your own style. I'm not sure if any of this helps but its a little insight to how I draw and developed a style. : )

Really looking forward to your finished color for this latest mech. How ARE thing's going w/ the computer
problem BTW? Glad to hear they're not slowing this project down at least...
Oh yeah, the "multi-limbed battleship" you mention in this vehicle description- would that be the one in your scraps?

CGVickers In reply to Rob-Cavanna [2007-12-04 23:04:14 +0000 UTC]
Yes and no. The multi-limbed battleship is a WIP name for mobile armors in this story. That sketch was a WIP I might try finishing one day but I have another sketch (not yet posted) that is the mech in question. I hope to post it when I have a break and a working scanner again. It's based off of an older design of mine called the "NAI Rhino MHWP" Currently it's new name is the "NAI Kohvahn" but that might change when I post it.

it's so nice to see you posting again!!! i was hoping you'd get back to it - i missed seeing your art in my new deviations box! ;D
after trying my hand at mecha, i have an even greater appreciation for your work - to draw such technical features, let alone design them - it really is impressive! the line work is amazing as it always is - i love looking at your black and white pictures as much as i love looking through your colored ones!
i'm so sorry i havent been commenting lately...i'm trying my best to find the time to log on and draw these days... *sigh*
i hope you have a great weekend!

Yeah, I have been rather sparce in my posts lately : P I have several designs at the 99% complete stage, yet I just can't seem to get something to look right or decide how I want to finish it so I tend to delay a lot of designs and posts. Mecha are something I've done for arround 19 or 20 years now and they're a passion so don't worry if you can't get them to look the way you want right away, after all, I still have problems after this long ; D
Sometimes I don't respond right away to your comments because I just like to leave them in my messages and reread them since they're always so complimentary and uplifting but don't worry about getting back right away since no doubt we're all busy and have other things to do.

!!!!!i couldnt believe that comment you left me!!!! that is the sweetest thing to say!!!! i had to re-read it several times!!! i really wish there were a way to save comments so you dont have to go searching for them again after you post them - i would love to be able to go straight to your comments when i'm in a slump....i have to admit, your's are one of the one's i look forward to the most!
and i dont mind at all if you take your time with messaging - even if you had only commented me once, i'd still be as happy as i am now! the fact that you added me and still continue to comment means so much!!!!
oh! before i forget - i actually have your art featured on my myspace profile...i just put it up, but i felt bad about doing it without getting your approval first...its 4 of your chibi cars - the subaru, toyota, honda crx, and lotus...i put a copyrighted by CGVickers on my main profile and my page is set up so only my friends can view it...but i wanted to know if your ok with having those works advertised on there....

Raja-Ulat [2007-11-07 04:14:50 +0000 UTC]
In other words, it's a detector unit to detect hidden and cloaked enemies, yes?
π: 0 β©: 1
CGVickers In reply to Raja-Ulat [2007-11-07 08:04:59 +0000 UTC]
Not really. It can't see cloaked units, but it can see through jamming. Most bases, and battles use a form of jaming that blinds mecha sensors. As a result, missle lockons are impossible and mecha are faced to fight in relatively close combat similar to large scale infantry war since their weapons and sensors can't lock on or find enemy units. Usually mecha can see through there own jamming fields but enemy units will jam as well so that no one can see. The Vaugahn isn't effected by jamming and can see just fine giving it a major advantage & making it a serious threat on the battle field.
The large rabbit ears on the back of the head are designed to detect stealth units but the advantage of the MDG Phantom's Phase Cloak is that it's impossible to detect.

When did you change to the semi-Five Star Stories mecha styling? The top half is distinctively your personal styling, while from the waist down & legs are very much from FFS.

CGVickers In reply to Barricade [2007-11-07 07:51:36 +0000 UTC]
Sorry, I can't say I know what Five Star Stories is. As far as the legs and general design, I'm trying to develope 3 styles/designs for a futer storie/manga. I hate that in most mecha series, because one artist designed them all, everything looks like one company built a series of mecha then sold them to rival nations. There are 3 major factions in this storie and so I needed a different stle for each yet similar enough that it's realistic they belong in the same world. As a result, I've been sketching a whole seies of components and I designed a foot similar to this for another NAI design and grew fond of it, so I started sketching a leg similar to the NAI Guard and just expanded upon it.

Don't feel bad. In fact its a compliment. Five Star Stories is a manga series produced, written, and drawn ENTIRELY by one single man. The designs are...exquisite. Also he has no problems in making designs look very disimiliar from each other, yet close enough to conform to the overall mecha 'lan' for his universe. In his case its where humanity has gene-engineered themselves to be incredibly smart, fast, strong, etc, and even then only a few of them can take it all in (becoming their version of Einsteins) and build these mecha. They're considered something like the famed Japanese Swordsmiths in that their mecha are also works of art as well as fully-functional, pure-bred weapons of war.
