30-something Fred picks up an old flip-phone. It was his first phone as a young teenager - one he'd once delivered newspapers to save for. The battery must be dead but what nostalgia! In a burst of light and excitement, a briefly blinded Fred finds himself feeling different. Everything is moving slower, and suddenly the year feels like it's 2004!
Flip phones are the latest technology, with some even including basic cameras and java games. The internet is rising in popularity like never before, with Freewebs letting tech-savvy people create their own blogs and websites, but social media hadn't taken off yet. The newly-released Sims 2 is blowing the world's mind, and Desperate Housewives is airing its first episodes and blessing us all with the drama of Wisteria Lane. Danny Phantom has just been introduced to the world, while Rugrats and Hey Arnold near their sunset.
As for the fashion, jeans are all mid-wash, low rise bootcut, wide at the bottom, and often worn with short tops. People dyed their hair in chunky streaky highlights. (a trend that would later be adopted by Karens... or did these ladies simply grow up into Karens?) Gel bracelets were so trendy, you better be wearing at least 3.
