Description
In the abyss it helps to have your own lights. Stinging lights.I was dinking around in photoshop for 2 hours and made a glowy Glaucer study in the dark. He likes the deep sea as much as the surface: no ordinary nudibranch. I had more fun drawing the fish though. Must draw more deepsea things again. It must be darker than I see on my laptop screen for other people, but it is supposed to be unsettlingly dim anyway for human vision so it works, bio lights aren't that bright in pitch black.

This character would be ridiculously fun to model in a 3D program, and place emmisive maps where he glows.

Really like this piece too. I love your whole gallery, and the incorporation of nudibranchs into your artwork is really unique. Keep it up

Great work, as always <3

That is extremely cool. And looks like it would have been heaps of fun to do XD Think the darkness is pretty much perfect, looks wonderfully freaky/creepy/unsettling/etc

This is a great piece of artwork~!
It inspired me to start looking through photos online and it reminded me of what amazing creatures Nudibranch are.
Thanks for sharing this one.

Love the color... how did you make it look like blacklight? I have a character with blacklight marks and I've been struggling on making it look correct.

I just kept it generally very dim with some mid value saturated light sources, making sure to avoid any light tones. But it is just a study.

though it is hard to see I like the fact that it is hard to see. ^^ down that deep you can't see anything, even with some light. I can make out the shape just fine and I love it so very much!

I was going for that silhouette feel, the only thing meant to be visible on Glaucer are the bio-luminescent tips of the cerata, and those don't make super bright light in pitch black, but I guess I could have done some more highlighting. Its funny when people must see everything in human-friendly illumination despite many places not having it.

yeah that is really funny lol. I like how it is now, it could even be slightly darker to make it harder to see the real shape of the creature, the lights are to mask its shape anyway lol. This picture makes me want to do another dark picture I did of my good friend's character ^^ he is a vampire squid from hell

I have one of those too (Vamp squid)! All the bio-luminescent species are a joy to work with, however stylized.

I love them so much! I need more of them lol I like doing the glowing effect in photoshop I need to figure out how to do it better though lol
[link] that is the vamp squid if you want to check him out, I drew him a different way than any of my other drawings lol he doesn't have an outline which made it really hard for me but I still like it!
I need to look up more bio-luminescent animals to draw

Wooo...phosphoresence! Very cool, although my eyes had to adjust for a second. I get it though...if it was physically possible for humans to go into the abyss without the aid of submersibles, we would not be able to see anything anyway.

Chael In reply to angelfish1021 [2010-10-15 18:58:00 +0000 UTC]
It would be pretty dark, unless we had special goggles with illuminators. I do wonder how abyssal creatures see compared to human vision with their dark adaptations.

angelfish1021 In reply to Chael [2010-10-15 23:48:38 +0000 UTC]
I would think that sight is not something that is terribly necessary. It's sort of like when someone is blind...all of the other senses make up for the lack of being able to see. Seems to me that those creatures in the abyss can simply *sense* what is going on around them.

it's really hard to see what it actually is,
maybe you should ad some more highlights orso, or make the background more dark.
Overall it looks like a really nice concept!

I think YMMV - your monitors may vary- is applicable here, but it is very dark, true.

Angler fish are so creepy looking but so awesome at the same time! I love this picture, but I can barely make anything out of it. May I suggest next time you use a pinch lighter background?

Chael In reply to Accelsier [2010-10-15 18:50:25 +0000 UTC]
Hmm, people are saying this, perhaps it looks more clear on my laptop screen than it would on another. Though it is the deep sea and supposed to be pretty dim. Perhaps more highlights next time.

Accelsier In reply to Chael [2010-10-16 05:51:21 +0000 UTC]
It is good to keep it dark enough so the glowing bits are the main attraction, but yes, I agree more highlights to outline the body just a tiny bit more.
