Description
Think living forever is fiction? Think again. There is a species of jellyfish that has attained biological immortality. Here it is in mer-form. Turritopsis nutricula holds one of the world's most fascinating and sought after secrets.
I have quite a few of these transparent mer studies of various species, they are very fun to do. I wonder if I should post more of them.

I heard several other species of aquatic life also have forms of "immortality"
Supposedly without disease or being killed lobsters can potentially live forever.

beautiful work! Your jelly-mers are always astounding. I really like how all the tentacles are so free flowwing and almost stylized in how they swirl around in some places. My only crit is that a border of some kind would help pull everything together and present it better, but then again, I am a border/frame fiend. XD

Very nicely done transparency! I also like the subject material you chose. I was under the assumption that all species die of old age eventually, so this is very interesting.

I never believed that an animal could revert from a sexually mature state back into a sexually immature state like this... that's incredible! Thank you for sharing this amazing bit of information!
The mer of this species looks great, too; the transparency effect is done very well. Have you done a study of the crystal jelly? They're pretty neat, too.

Aequorea? Yeah, they are related to this species actually. My favorites so far are a glowing deep sea jelly and the purple striped pelagia. I may do a more refined pic of these two later.

arcane-phoenix In reply to Chael [2008-05-08 20:06:50 +0000 UTC]
Ah, they're closely related? Nice. I like the crystal jelly a lot myself, but the Irukandji jellyfish is interesting, too... if not nasty due to the syndrome it can cause in humans.
There are so many amazing species in the ocean... they make us land animals look so boring.

oh wow... firstly, you rendered the transparency beautifully. O_O. secondly, how utterly facinating! i never heard of a creature that goes back and forth between under and fully developed Oo;. that's gonna boggle my mind for a while. thirdly, OF COURSE you should post more!
how are you doing, anyway? it's been a while since we've spoken. ;_:

It is not really a girl, more a genderless type creature.

*shrugs* well, then it is kinda hard for that speicies to reproduce then XD lol
but besides that, it looks nice

Chael In reply to artest-pad [2008-05-08 21:43:29 +0000 UTC]
Not really. Ever hear of asexual reproduction or hermaphroditism? Many sea animals have other was to reproduce than separate males or females...
