Oh hey this thing is only 4 days late (starting from the iTunes HD release and not the episode airing) and no longer relevant.
I take it that Flash Sentry was never written into any episode plots, but the layout artists had some fun, to explain his appearance despite a certain tweet. Β It's not like fanservice if not inserts are unheard of this season, though not necessarily referring to equines specifically with that.
He's still one of my favorite characters and I feel he deserves more love than he gets. Β But that's just me.

What's so hateworthy about a joke character?
Flash Sentry/Twilight Sparkle is literally a joke pairing. Nothing about the pair up makes any sense, and it's kinda obvious that it's supposed to make fun of shipping fanfiction.
Hell, the only reason he was in Friendship Games was so that Human Twilight could ignore him. Twice.
