Here's my entry for the coloring contest given by one of my favorite groups:
If you're interested in entering, here are the details [link]
I was happy with my coloring, not so much the scan. The skin is a lot smoother on the paper, the scanner didn't pick up any of the violet hues in the star shapes or her eyes and the flower has much more purple and pink than is showing here. The misty stuff at the bottom also has more pink in it. Other than that I'm pretty happy with it. My idea for the coloring was to get a little more creative than I usually do. Rather than color her eyes like normal eyes, I chose to make them "windows" into the night sky because the theme for this picture is the Zodiac which is based off of astrology. I continued that theme with the star shapes instead of coloring them basic yellow. I'm pretty happy with that.
I used my Prismacolor pencils for the subject and chalk pastels for the background color. I used a white gel pen for the white dots and a metallic silver gel pen for the swirls on beside her.
Here is the awesome lineart: [link]
made by the fabulous
Funny tidbit: The point of this contest was to color your own sign. I had to look mine up b/c I had no idea what it was.

Thank you so much! I'm so flattered by this wonderful feedback. I'm so glad you like the hair. Hair is my favorite thing to color in the whole world so I always try to do my absolute best with it. I thought the touch of blue might bring the whole thing together since I have kind of a blue motif going on here. That skin was rather difficult to blend but I'm so glad you like it. I've looked at your gallery and your skin tones are brilliant! I admire your digital coloring skills. I would love to get as good as you are. I'm glad you like the flower also. That kind of came out of nowhere. I was trying my best to give the petals a realistic texture. I don't know if I achieved that, but the result of what I did was interesting nonetheless. Thanks again!

You're so welcome and please forgive me for such a late reply, hun! I've rarely had any free time to catch up here on DeviantArt!
You're right about the touch of blue! It was a perfect touch!
Aw, and thank you! I have so much to still learn. I try so hard with hair & while it is my favorite thing to color I totally suck at it, haha. I just can't find the right technique that i'm comfortable with. The hair and backgrounds are my nemesis, lol!
But you really pulled off the hair in this one! It's truly beautiful!!
And you're very welcome!

It's quite alright. I have had very little free time myself lately.
Again, I'm so flattered by your wonderful compliments! It means a lot to me that you like the piece so much. I think you do beautiful hair! We all are constantly learning and improving so there's no need to worry about that. I have so much yet to learn myself. Although I'm pleased with the way I color, I would still like to get better at it. Art is like anything else. There's always room to grow. I'd say you have a wonderful start! I love your coloring style and I'm really flattered that you took the time to comment on my humble coloring job here! Thanks again!

I love how you colored this! The colors are stunning, powerful yet the atmosphere is there. Once again the shadows are perfect and so is the lightning. The way you colored those stars is really amazing. I'm sure not many people would have thought of doing it your way.And I LOVE those blue streaks in her hair too! Very well done!

Thank you so much! I felt I needed to step outside the box with this one since it was a contest. I think that the idea I had with the stars and the blue in her hair really made it stand out. I have been practicing with skin tones to try and make them more uniform and blended and I think my practice is finally showing with this one. Thank you again for the wonderful words! Your comments always mean a lot to me!

This is amazing!!!!! I don't know where to start it is all fantastic! You really have mastered using pencils & pastels it all looks so smooth and perfectly executed. I love that you did the stars in her eyes and the way you coloured the actual stars. This is my star sign too and you have so achieved everything I would have wished for in mine! I just love it

Another Virgo, Yay!! I didn't even know I was a Virgo before this, lol! Thank you so much for the fave and the wonderful comment. I've come a long way with my pencil skills for sure. I'd like to keep getting better though. Pastels are relatively new to me so I was glad I got them this smooth. I blended them with a Q-tip so it took a while. I'm glad you like the eyes. I was pretty proud of that idea. Are you planning to do an entry? We need some more traditional colorings.
Thanks again for the awesome comment!

I've been there before. I've had pieces half done for like three months. Sometimes I just loose the will to work on them, usually when I get around to the background. I can't wait to see yours though! Are you coloring it traditionally?
Sapphire is my birthstone as well! You're a September girl too?

vinpip In reply to Chalaya [2013-07-11 21:00:41 +0000 UTC]
Yes I'm doing it traditionally - my digital skills are practically non-existent lol I've done the background separate so I didn't spoil what I'd started on the lines! I'm kinda scared of spoiling it so I've backed off.
Yes mine is the 4th

Yay! The contest needs more traditional entries. Everyone is doing digital these days. I can do decently digitally, but I was fortunate enough to get a tablet so that makes it much easier. But I know how you feel about the background thing. I'm always nervous about whether or not I'll ruin the picture if I don't do the background right. You've done your background separate? That's really interesting. How did you do that?
Wow! Mine is the 5th!

vinpip In reply to Chalaya [2013-07-12 15:38:54 +0000 UTC]
I know I can't believe how few traditional entries there are!! perhaps they'll all come in at the last minute.
My o/h has a tablet but my computer can't handle any complicated software.
I've been trying out some different techniques with my copics - like dropping alcohol based liquids onto them ( I only had surgical spirits so it kinda pongs lol)I've also added glitter to the background so I didn't want to effect the coloured lines so I'll add them to the background via computer. I hope this isn't pushing the traditional boundary too much!!
Well I'll not forget your birthday now lol

Chalaya In reply to vinpip [2013-07-12 17:26:36 +0000 UTC]
I hope more traditional entries will pop up.
That sounds really neat. It's amazing what you can do with Copics. If only they weren't so expensive! That background you're working on sounds awesome! I really wish I knew how to put a picture with a background on the computer. I wouldn't even know where to begin. I don't think it's pushing the boundary though. Both the background and the subject are traditionally done. All you're doing with the computer is putting them together. I'd do that in a heart beat if I know how.
Haha, yeah what are the odds of that?

I'm so glad you like it! I think I'm going to be addicted to coloring Jade's linearts for a while. This was so much fun! I'm glad you liked the smoothness. I just wish I could show it off the way it really looks on paper. I was proud of the way her blush turned out and the scanner killed it (of course). Thanks for the great comment as usual!
Nope, I had no idea! Never had a reason to find out before! XD
