Description It's finally finished. I spent over six hours today on the texture. Six hours, Brandon . It's a seeker droid from Star Wars. It will be used in my map for Star Wars Battlefront II as well as my friend RepSharpshooter's map. Personally, I love how it turned out. This is the first model I've actually textured well enough to be considered decent in my opinion. Hopefully you guys will agree.

You're welcome, you're really talented. How long did it take to do the whole thing?

Challenger3 In reply to ForgottenxXxMemory [2008-07-06 21:53:22 +0000 UTC]

Over 10 hours

Thanks.

It's the texture that takes long, really. If I may quote one of my early mentors in 3-D Modeling: "You should spend at least the same amount of time on the texture as you do the model if you want it to look decent."

Thanks; I should hope so. It took a grand total of >10 hours.

But it works great in-game now, so I'm glad about that.

Haha. Thanks.

Yes, modding takes quite a bit of patience, for example, I started my first map before last summer and still haven't been able to finish it due to time constraints as well as my mom taking the external hard drive with all my modding files on it.

Of course, I released one version on Christmas Eve last year, intentionally. That was the last version anyone got; I said it would be the last one (it won't be). But I haven't been able to work on it for months.

Qdin [2008-06-28 17:53:13 +0000 UTC]

Looking good, actually. Impressive enough

So tell me, did you cut off other textures into this, or did you partly draw it from scratch or 100% homedrawn on the computer? Either way, it's good for a first "try", so to say.

I think it looks more like you've taken a premade texture and tried to adapt the UVW maps after the texture.
As my old teacher once asked me: "Did you map the texture, or did you texture the map?"

Now, I think refining the edges would be an excellent finishing touch to this one. I have to admit I dislike the top antenna; it has too much texture if you ask me.
The "arms" are actually decent enough to work, so I think you should leave them as they are now.The flashlight-lense looks good, well done there, an dno distortion whatsoever. The other ones which are black with some red, am I not so satisfied with Considered making a red-colored SpecularMap instead over the black "zoomers"?

The front "eye" thing, is not something I'm satisfied with. Soften the edges around it as well as the minor one to the right while you check if you could "heal" up some of the UV borders (hehe, you can actually spend hours trying to make it seamless, but it's always worth it!).

Last thing I just noticed, is the underside-spiked thingy it has underneath.. did you just throw over a flat Cubic premap? you'll adjust the texture, at least, if you want it to work - at least out on the edges of it.

Hope it was helpful. and I'll see you around one of the days.. bought a new monitor *yay* but then my internet fucks up *boo* ._.''

Thanks for your input - I appreciate feedback from a fellow modeler. Yeah, I partly created it and partly used other textures. I actually only used one UV Map for this, Unique UVs, because I had no idea how to do any better (now I do). The spiky thing underneath is a blaster, haha. I might consider adjusting that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Qdin In reply to Challenger3 [2008-06-29 13:52:00 +0000 UTC]

hehe, yea - Unique UV's are awesome in many ways. I just personally ended up realising, that a quicker and adaptive way is actually to use the "select from camera" or pick a "part" of the model (let's say you want the top) then you select the vertices or faces, and then you make it flattened from this desired angle so you end up with a pretty good and natural projection of the sides. When I say natural, I mean so you don't end up with i.e. 3 UV's which are cubic and same size on the texture, but on the real model they are of various sizes: will create distortion and is awfully noticeable by our brains as it can see the patterns.. and quickly notices when the pattern repeats itself on different surfaces
Will you make a remapping of this one, possibly? I promise you it'll take less than 2 hours now that you know how to do it, and how you want it - and since you can actually "steal" some of the stuffs from the current texture if you're satisfied with it

So.. the thing's a blaster?

heh, I haven't touched some 3D for half a year now, I'm starting to miss Maya and XSI ^_^

I wouldn't mind fiddling with some rigging for that one in Maya once you're done with it, just for the refreshing of the mind and such

UV mapping is funny once you get the hang of it; I ended up being the best at my school to adjust and create UVW Maps at my school; even better than my teachers who had worked with it since Maya was a Alpha stage program xD (that happens when you slack The program had changed so much over the years, and so was the interface, that they got lost in the ways.)

I still claim that XSI has THE best UVW mapping tools ever ;D

Challenger3 In reply to Qdin [2008-06-29 14:30:37 +0000 UTC]

Would you care to help with the UV mapping as well (over Xfire)? Because now I've heard of two good, but different, methods.

Oh, and if you want to rig it, by all means, go for it. I'll send you the model sometime. Thanks.
