These howitzers stand prominently on my college campus, yet when people see this photograph hanging on my wall they ask where it was taken. When I tell them they walk by it every day, I love the look on their face.

Ten second exposure in the dead of a very cold, foggy night. It was overcast, all light is ambient with a manual fill flash set to a very dim setting. Kodak C41 black and white...the last roll of it I ever shot.

Note: I felt the silver vertical element, an empty flagpole, added to the haunting, lonely feeling of this shot, and therefore chose not to alter it. I realize it is somewhat distracting...but it was a part of this scene. That night I felt I was the only person on a campus of 25,000 students who was even awake. I felt alone, and even the flag had gone to sleep.
