Well I can suggest payload as well as a generally fun game mode, and there's a whole host of other community-made maps out there to play on.

Hm, won't let you choose random? Well the only other suggestion I can make is to go to the direct server browser to find a place. If you want a specific gametype like ctf or payload just type ctf or pl into the tags section and it'll probably find a server that way.

I know. And after I try random, it starts to say I'm not even connected to the internet, so I have to quit the game for awhile

That's also confusing.. random usually works fine honestly. One thing I could possibly suggest is to validate the steam cache files for TF2. If you right click the game itself in steam and go into properties then 'local files' you should be able to go through another process labelled "Verify integrity of game cache". It can sometimes iron out little problems that might be causing the issue, but that's just my own guess to the whole thing.
