Description
Previously i posted an image of an easle that i built for a commission that i was going to be working on. Well, this is it. This is a commission for a client who wanted a life sized drawing of an african wild dog. I've got a long way to go, but so far so good. Im really happy with the textures and darks that im achieving. Im using pencil and charcoal on Bristol Smooth paper. The lines that you see on the background is frisket film. My client wanted just the dog and nothing on the background. The frisket film will protect it from getting dirty and from you can see, its working. I made the body slightly blurry in order to give the drawing much more depth and make the face stand out much more. Thanks for watching and be sure to follow my page on facebook.www.facebook.com/onlypencil.dr…

That background stuff looks really useful. I tend to use a piece of paper under my hand to stop smudging, but it almost inevitably smudges anyway - either from graphite getting onto the paper, or when I get too into drawing and forget to move the paper enough as I move my hand.
The blurry body is really effective. The depth of tone in the ears especially is definitely impressive too.
One thing I'm curious about as most people I've asked seem to have very differing opinions - do you use techniques like indenting to get the white hairs, or do you draw round? I've tried both and currently lean towards drawing round the white hairs, but I've never tried charcoal - does it work much differently from graphite? I'd imagine charcoal is a lot harder to achieve sharp edges with, but presumably better at getting the very dark tones without warping the paper.

Its so useful and it keeps are clean.
i do indent the white hairs. you can several tutorials on my site on the technique that i use onlypencil.com/blog
Charcoal is darker than graphite an it does not have as much shine. Its much dirtier though, so its a bit harder to use. For sharper edges, just use a sharp charcoal pencil. I use a combination of graphite and charcoal to get the darks that i want.

Pretty excellent, dude.
Wonder why [s]he doesn't want a background? Seems to me, that would only enhance the photographic perfection of it.
But, to each his own, I guess.
Look forward to seeing the completed piece.

thank you. They want the dog to be the main focus. I agree that a background would enhance the dog but its their decision.
