Generally, my workflow is broken up into two steps:
Β 1) Create a base structure that is cool to work with.
Β 2) Modify, figure out colors, frame, add details to, and work with it until I'm happy.
Β 3) Render the thing out.
Step 1 can take anywhere from 2-8 hours. Β I'd guess that four hours is about average.
Step 2 can take from 30 minutes to days, depending on what I want to do with what I see. Β Generally, I'd estimate this taking a few hours.
Step 3 can be from 30 minutes to 12 hours (at which point I'll render it overnight and when I'm at work) depending on how noisy the image is.
