Description
This is one of the animation assignments I had for my Animation Production class, taught by none other than Gary Goldman. (of Don Bluth Studios, squeeeee!) 'Tis Dirk the Daring, from the Dragon's Lair video game. We were given six drawings of the original animation, and we had to animate using them. We also given exactly 96 frames to complete the sword draw and swing.Honestly, I can't put into words how much I learned from these assignments and those classes as a whole. The simplicity of the animation assignment can't properly convey it. :3

Wow, Gary Goldman taught you this? That's amazing. I'd love a chance to meet any of the Bluth team, let alone be taught by one of them.

Awesome!
You really captured the bluth-esque animation we all love.
I think Dragon's Lair and Space Ace are the most vibrantly animated and colourful projects Don Bluth & Gary Goldman have ever pulled off.

There are 96 frames in this total, though we were provided with some of them, I don't remember how many. And I think this took me two weeks, if I remember right.

Yup, I do enjoy lots of Bluth's movies. I love his animation a lot more than his storytelling sometimes, though. X3

Oh, definitely. I feel the same way.
THe Secret of NIMH I thought was a great movie. The story wasn't great, but the visuals were cool.

I wonder if you maybe able to help me i want to make an animation for my hsc. But itll take for ever having to constantly draw the background is there any tips or advice you maybe able to help me with.

ChaosKomori In reply to Catseyedan2000 [2008-11-05 09:46:12 +0000 UTC]
Well, there are ways to make a single bg image, so that you only have to worry about the character's animation. However, it requires you have a proper animation program. Any decent animation program will have layers, so that you can put the background on one layer, animate on a layer above it. Try the free program Pencil. I haven't actually used it, but it's very similar to Flash.

OMG! I would love to have done this as an assignment! We never did anything that cool in our classes...and i think thats why the US animation graduates are so much better than the UK. Its not fair.

No kidding about the pencil tests... and I'm surprised they have limits on the movie files (or at least don't have more categories for you to fit shorter clips in) Even commercial work is less than 10 seconds if you break the different sections that get worked on... so you couldn't even put up clips from work that you've completed to finished product.
Personally, I was bummed that they limit the flash files to flash.. I liked being able to convert my movies and fit them into their respective categories... 3D, pencil test, etc...
Maybe they'll change it back if we bother them enough ^_-

very pretty.
there's one part that seems odd to me though.. It seems strange for him to take that little step backwards with his left foot when he's swinging the sword back over his shoulder.. he's not standing over his right foot, so most of his weight should be on that left one right? but he's moving it. It just looks like it would really put him off balance, and makes him look a little bit like an incompetent swordsman.
Mind you I know nothing about the character, and almost as much about swordplay.

ChaosKomori In reply to nightmary [2008-03-18 04:26:48 +0000 UTC]
Yup, I completely agree with you. I actually had wanted to switch his legs so his left leg was forward. However, we were provided with the first frame and the last frame, and we were required to make his leg move like that, because that's the way the director wanted. To be honest, it was a bit of a learning experience for me, doing something that was right for the director and not something that was actually right animation-wise. :<

There's a lot of odd things going on with that scene... he holds the sword strangely, one of the frames we had flipped the hands on the sword... To be honest, I did a lot of tweaking to the frames we were given. >.>
Luckily, our director didn't seem to mind the changes. Fwew!
It was a pretty cool learning experience. I agree with that 100%.
I have to admit I think I'll miss Gary hanging around the building on weekends like one of the crazy animation students. lol

Yeah, sometimes he didn't mind the changes, and other times he'd catch you doing them and nail you for them. Like, I had changed his feet movements from what they were in the poses at first. He didn't catch it in the poses, and he didn't notice in the keys, or even the first pass of breakdowns. But then I showed him the second pass of breakdowns and suddenly he wanted me to go back to the original poses. Gahh, I was so close to sneaking it by him! XDD
