I borrowed from a friend and brought home the Last Specter today. My brothers were convinced (from the admittedly vague and kind of small-detail oriented description I gave them) that it was about some horrible murder that was committed, in the midst of which Layton is constantly forcing the player to do mundane and unimportant puzzles. They were probably just screwing with me, though.
