Dyson’s demeanor no longer reflected authority, and although instinct still nagged at him to destroy the viral program, he wasn’t going to. It wasn’t his place; he wasn’t in charge of anything– not here or now, not anymore.
He hadn’t been for a long time; and at this point, he could hardly be called a security program. The function gave his code some inherent immunity from infection, but he had no way of knowing how far his resistance to it went– no way to tell if or when he would become one of those monsters destroying everything in his path. And so he was somewhere apart; not a protector of the Grid, nor among the Infected who had once devastated it.
