Description A tribute to a local hero of the Civil War, General Adelbert Ames (1835-1933), who earned the Medal of Honor for meritorious actions at the First Battle of Bull Run in July 1861. He also served the state of Mississippi as military governor, U.S. Senator, and civilian governor before retiring to the Lowell-Tewksbury area in 1876. He later served as a general in the Spanish-American War of 1898, and became wealthy from the mills he owned in Lowell.

I've taken a particular interest in General Ames partly because he lived in Lowell - in fact, he is buried within walking distance of my house - and partly because he is connected to the OTHER renowned war hero from Maine, General Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain; Ames received command of the 20th Maine regiment in 1862, and Chamberlain was his second-in-command. When Ames earned his general's stars, Chamberlain became the regiment's commander, and later earned the Medal of Honor himself for actions at Gettysburg.

With this one, I colorized a portrait of General Ames in Photoshop, then took a picture of the flag of Maine (appropriate, even though he's buried here - Maine was home, after all) and a picture of the Medal of Honor plaque installed at his grave, which I took myself at the Hildreth family cemetery where he's buried. Normally, the cemetery is locked all year - except for the first Sunday in November, where he and his father-in-law, General Benjamin F. Butler, are honored by a society made up of local Civil War enthusiasts and descendants of the family.
