Description
And now to the popular Brotherhood members!
Now Spectre here was one of the tougher ones, as you could imagine, not only with making him a bit more different then his original design but to avoid making him look 'odd' I ditched the smoke as it made little sense to me, but I kept his hidden cybernetics and I'll put up a ref of that soon, but his helmet situation was the most difficult, I didn't know whether I wanted to make it some sort of different helmet or making something lighter like a hood or even something else entirely, but i liked the idea of a hood the best, especially with bits of armour or something on it. A lot of his clothes design were inspired by some Japanese male fashion I look up and some of the designs for the Mortal Kombat characters, mainly being Ermac and slightly Sub-Zero and Scorpion. So the Japanese-style was intended with him, I'm very happy I went with that style all due to a personal head canon.
Like how a lot of people make Spectre act, he's still quite stubborn and short-tempered, having trust issues and usually becoming quite angry or aggressive quickly, but theres more to him then that, he's got a lot of reasons to have his trust issues but he's also quite an honourable, determined and fair man, wanting nothing but justice for his people. He's usually trying his best to be peaceful and not to let his temper and personal opinions get in the way of Guardian duties, although it can be difficult and he can slip up at times. He didn't use to be as short-tempered or find it difficult to trust people, but his incident including his parents make it difficult for him. When his father and Moritori-Rex fought, he was of course, worried sick about his father, but when his 'father' was in the Hospital and even more so when he came home, something felt... off to him. He knew he had this memory loss but he felt like he barely knew him, he wouldn't play his ukelele, he wouldn't do origami with him, but when he was a teenager, he found out that his 'father' had been making 'log-dates' about his family. This made him suspicious and want to tell the rest of the family but he was threatened that if he did, his mother would pay for his mistakes, since then, he didn't want to be alone with his father, because when he was, he'd be abused, mainly verbally or psychologically but even physically at some points too. It was that one night that changed everything in his life, he was suddenly woken up by his mother who seemed scared and told him that Tobor wasn't Tobor at all and they needed to leave immediately. Before he could leave the house, she was killed right in front of him, at 15-16 years of age, seeing his mother being literally stabbed in the back, was and still is to this day, one of the most traumatising experiences for him. He felt heartbroken but also rage at the man who murdered his mother, but he was easily subdued and kidnapped, but luckily before his mother died, she sent a message to the rest of the Brotherhood, telling them what happened and about 'Tobor', but she soon died from her wound.
When taken to a hidden base of the Dark Legion, he was asked to join their ranks, he refused in outrage, so Rex decided to punish him. Soon afterwards he was giving his Cybernetics but he was more of an experiment. They had been developing these new cybernetics that didn't require any limbs to be removed but ones that could be internally wired to the nerves and enhanced the limb and bodies itself. It was unclear what the results would be but to Rex, Spectre was the perfect lab-rat for punishment. So feeling the cybernetics dug under his skin, connecting to his body and nerves, was a excruciating experience, not even given an anaesthetic to make it easier for him. What was originally planned was for him to become a mindless solider for Rex, by using a microchip to brainwash him and have him be a mindless, obedient slave for him but he was lucky that the Brotherhood had managed to rescue him before anything else could happen but it was still too late to remove the cybernetics... he was permanently scarred with the robotics to be apart of his body. It was hard for him to come to terms with the fact, as he was forced to have the one thing that his enemies wore with pride, it made him feel like a monster, and his body developing with it was even worse for him to try and adapt too, but luckily he got help... but he wouldn't feel the same after that. When his family got news that someone who claims to be Tobor had been taken to the Angel Island Hospital, Spectre of course had to go, he was hesitant and was unsure what to believe him but it was him, it was his father... it was an extremely sentimental moment for the two, not only tears of sadness and pain were shed but tears of joy. For his own personal liking, to hide his cybernetics and still think and honour his mother, he wears clothing that stems from the culture his mother loved dearly and that he grew up with. Becoming one of the strongest and most endurable Guardians in the line, although some strangers and citizens might mistake him as someone who is untrustworthy or even terrifying, he proves them wrong with his honour and dedication to protect his people.
Whoops, seems that I rambled there a little. Sorry about that, It's still hard to speak things out due to my sickness and being a bit tired but i hope it makes sense. I'm still extremely proud of how he came out so I hope you all like it too! x'3

To be honest, the smoke always was the most nonsensical to me as well. Either he always wore a fog machine under his clothes or Haven is so dusty that his cloak never stops whirling up a cloud of dust wherever he goes. I actually had this idea once of Spectre returning to Haven after his long absence (along with the rest of the current Brotherhood), the trail of "smoke" following him, then he suddenly stops, stares at his trail for a while and then shouts "Locke! There's something called a vacuum cleaner!" XD
I love how you went with the black fur. It was actually kinda disappointing to read on the wiki some day that his fur is actually red and it's just a shadow from the helmet. After all he actually looked to be of a darker kind when he was shown as a toddler. Personally I still would have gone along with the idea that it's so dark red that it appears to be black unless it's under the right lighting conditions but just plain red doesn't suit him at all.
The new clothes design fits him really well. It also somehow makes him look like a mage. That's also the class and probably also the look he would have rocked if I followed my idea of putting them all in a video game world. Personally I would have stayed with the helmet because I have the feeling that's the one thing he would only take off if it's absolutely necessary (he might even sleep with that thing on XD )

Pfft! I know right! I was going to originally add some logic behind it with that it's smoke due to the overheating of his hidden cybernetics so it constantly followed him but, then I decided nah. Ditch it!!
Yeah, the only thing I would've allowed if it was a dark shade of a colour or black itself, as it suits him too well! x'3 Guess that just shows the inconsistency within those comics. XD
I'm glad! I tried to give him a more Japanese feel, as I always imagined my version of his mother to be a bit Japanese in Ethnic taste. ^^ I especially got inspired by a lot of clothing designs from Mortal Kombat, mainly from Ermac latest design and a hint of some others.
Ah, right. I really did want to keep the helmut but I just couldn't get a design of my own into it, as much as I tried, and I also decided to make something lighter and a bit more casual for him so he wouldn't look suspicious and like a Legionnaire while just walking around the city.
Although I did still added some 'armour' to it, and it can be removed if he wanted to. Hell, I'd like to imagine if he's in battle, he'd wear a helmut or have a mask around his face like Mortal Kombat! >8D

With the Asian style a samurai helmet would have fitted. But that probably would have looked better if he had worn full on samurai armour. Probably would have looked funny too if a Guardian walked through the city in full samurai armour.
There could be smoke around Spectre shortly after he's teleporting somewhere even though that also doesn't sound right because why would Chaos energy smoke. Else there really isn't a way to explain it logically.

I love what you did with his hood/helmet, I think what you went with in the end looks very fiiting for him but also gives us something different to look at . Most excellent work on his design Charlee! I think ditching the smoke was also a good idea for this version, perhaps he could have some sort of smoke bombs instead?
And again I fucking LOVE you went with the black fur. I think it makes the character stand out all the more, they said Spectre was always the wild card and such, so him having black fur makes him all the more of a wild card .
THinking back, I still feel disaapointed at the announcement of "his fur isn't black, it is red, just in shadow". That is so dull and boring, considering nearly every damn echidna was red! >.<.
But yes! really awesome work on his design Charlee!, you sound like you had fun with this one

I'm glad you like it, it's what I did try to aim for, something fitting yet new to look at for him. And I agee, the smoke around his legs seemed a little strange, i know it probably added an ominous feel to him but it was illogical, I thought maybe it would've happened because his cybernetics got overheated but I thought that was always a pretty dumb idea so I scratched that too but maybe, that idea doesn't sound like a bad idea. ^^
Exactly, and it didn't make any sense to me to have a character with red eyes who also had red fur? Too much red for my liking and it'd show a lot more diversity with fur colours and such, besides, black suits him so much better then red.
Thank you, I did honestly, it was difficult but fun. ^^

Yes the smoke certainly looked cool but it doesn't make sense really. A friend of mine wrote a story where Spectre has to wear a healing suit after he was burned and that was the cause of the smoke. Which I think explains it really well.
but canonly, yeah, it doesn't make much sense. That is a good thought too, that it could be his cybernetics overheating but again, like you said, even that doesn't make sense.
there is also this, that makes the most sense!
I think it was a nice detail that certainly added diversity and I think a lot of fans enjoyed it too. He was clearly designed to be a mysterious character and having black fur helped that too.

Oh yes, I remember that comic, it's why I couldn't take the smoke seriously, like why?!
It does! It's why I had to keep it! He suits being the dark character he is!

I love this redesign. It's great. I even like the clothes you put him.
