Description

I already had something like this in mind considering certain current events, but a comment from had to push me over the edge...since Batgirl is involved, it is kind of a follow up to my art and commentary "Dodging Bullets", and for certain clear reasons considering the two great redheads above!

The postmodern merry-go-round just keeps going and going, doesn't it?

In the name of resetting and redefining our culture according to the arbitrary standards of the postmodern who think so many damned things need to be 'fixed' so everyone feels 'included', they're at it again.  For those of you who have seen the 1989 Disney classic "The Little Mermaid", I almost don't have to go into all of the reasons why a controversy that's exploding into a full blown cultural flashpoint is happening.  I've also covered similar ground to this in my commentary "The Curious Case of Betsy Braddock", and it looks like I need to do it again as I fully explain why I absolutely hate what the oppressive 'stunning and brave' and 'inclusive' and 'tolerant' are trying to do.

In the end, this is about skin color, yet it isn't.  Disney's upcoming live action remake of "The Little Mermaid" has, to put it kindly, decided to 'cast against type' by having an African-American actress play Ariel.  We first saw her in the teaser trailer very, very recently, but reactions have been anything but subdued from all sides.  Of course, the postmodern wokeists are praising this all over the place and lauding Disney for their diversity.  Like lemmings, they might as well be lining up to jump from a cliff as their feelings give them wings.

However...and this is a BIG however...the response from people who feel really differently has been massive.  You can simply see it in the comment section for the teaser on YouTube.  Nearly uniformly, there's been a response of sheer, uniform disdain.  If you have a certain plug in for YT, you'd see that while likes may number in like half a million, the last I saw the teaser had OVER TWO MILLION DISLIKES.  Much like the disastrous Lord of the Rings Amazon series "The Rings of Power", the reaction has been overwhelmingly NEGATIVE!  It's not hard to understand why.

Again, this is about skin color...yet it really isn't.  I'm sure most all of those people who have reacted strongly in the negative are just like me, they've seen and love and remember well the 1989 movie where Jodi Benson gave her immortal voice to Ariel, who was a white redheaded girl.  (Who happened to have a fish tail instead of legs, though!)  That classic film really wasn't that long ago, but Disney in their total lack of creativity and desire to make money, decided "The Little Mermaid" had to be remade in live action the same way they did "Aladdin", "Pinocchio", "The Lion King" (well, not exactly live action), and on and on and on.  We who know and love the classics and have seen how completely cynical and political Disney has become in recent years see what's going on.  This isn't just being done to transform a legendary character by tokenizing a talented singer and actress named Halle Bailey for 'woke points', which by itself is a completely arbitrary and unnecessary move and absolutely shameless political stunt to draw attention to themselves...and naturally, make black people want to see the movie.

Remember what I told you about ESG Investing?  I really have to question just how 'progressive' this move by Disney is.  I really do.

What only makes matters even worse is the fact that this is YET ANOTHER UNNECESSARY REMAKE from a corporation that can't seem to try to be original anymore.  Look at all of the live action remakes Disney has done.  You can feel the pure cynicism and lack of magic in them.  Oh, and also not coincidentally, they're not very good movies.  Put them all side by side with the films that inspired them, and the animated classics would blow them ALL out of the water.  It's almost tragic that Disney is being only slightly more creative with their social manipulation making Ariel black than they seem to be putting any real love into even the teaser trailer, which is a murky mess!

Mega-Stacy Brett Cooper covers all the angles of what's happening a lot better than I ever could in this video...

And Matt Walsh, who'd never apologize for being himself, goes into the tokenism in play and how it's completely, inherently racist on the part of the mainly white corporate heads who want to look so damn 'inclusive'...

It's curious how a lot of literal white knights and not-white people on the postmodern side of the political fence are using every possible excuse and exercising so-called 'logic' to justify this ethnic swap.  Bottom line, and I won't apologize for saying this, a lot of this involves these people being pretty selfish bastards themselves.  Make no mistake, these people want to reset Ariel and make her 'theirs'.  Let me elaborate...

Just for one example, I saw this comment on YT:  "Mermaids live in the ocean with constant sun on them. Don’t you think they’ll be black or some shade of brown??? Why does this bother you?"  Clever, huh?  As someone else said, this person obviously isn't taking into account Beluga Whales, which are white as the driven snow...

I've seen woke idiots ask that again and again and again.  Why does this bother you?  Ariel doesn't HAVE to be white!  Aren't you being INTOLERANT?  Aren't you being a BIGOT?!

In one word:  nope!  This isn't about skin color...at least it wasn't, not until Disney decided, in a shameless political move to gain publicity, to make Ariel black because it's the Current Year thing to do.  It's the exact same damn thing as swapping Little Orphan Annie, Jimmy Olsen, and so many more redheaded (and even non-ginger!) fictional characters.  Do I have to remind you of Catwoman and Black Canary in the movies lately?  This is basically the monetizing of ethnicity through tokenization, as I've explained before, and this should be called insulting as fuck by everyone in the same way everyone knows pedophiles have no place in a civilized society where they could prey upon children.  In fact, a lot of black people -- a LOT more than you think! -- are on record saying they don't like this and they sure as hell never asked to be !represented! this way!

I'm sure many of us, no matter what color we are, remember the 1989 classic well.  For godsakes, you can still buy the non-extras DVD on the cheap at your local Wal-Mart for ten damn dollars!  (I'd recommend a much more local business, though.  Support 'em and don't give so much love to Amazon and the giant chains who think they're the only game in town! )

One of the dumbest takes I've ever seen is this:  someone said that those who don't want a white character to be played by a black actress are bigoted.  Somehow.  Okay.  Fine.  Let's take your dumb-ass logic all the way.  Let's ethnic-swap Captain America, Wonder Woman, Superman, Spider-Man, and all the other white heroes.  Hope you don't mind if we decide to do the same thing to black heroes like Luke Cage, T'Challa the Black Panther, Shuri, John Stewart, and more and make them white?  Oh, you WOULD mind that?  THEN SHUT THE FUCK UP!

Things have never been more equal in our country and our culture.  Some of the most celebrated and beloved figures in America are black.  We had a black President for two terms.  Oprah Winfrey is the richest woman anywhere.  Do I have to cite all of the other examples of how so-called 'oppression' in this day and age is all in the heads of the whackos and extremists who will never, ever be happy unless they have a cause to screech about?  How long are we going to have dumb-ass white people buy into postmodern bullshit like CRT and the idea they're horrible people from birth?  It's all of that kind of derangement, the need to look for a bogeyman, the overwhelming desire to get attention and appear wonderful to everyone else, that prompts this sheer stupidity that's only perpetuating divisions and making life a matter of 'us versus them'.  I'm fucking tired of it.  ALL OF IT.

Look at the good question Ariel asks us at the end of the brief comic above.  Why was it even necessary for her to be played by a black actress?  It wasn't necessary in any way, shape, and form.  Those like me who fell in love with the true Ariel from 1989, the mermaid with the golden voice, would never ever have thought she needed to be changed in any sense.  There was absolutely nothing wrong with her.  There still isn't.  She didn't have to be 'fixed' for any damned reason.  That's my gripe, and if you honestly think I'm the bad guy for saying that, if you somehow want to own her because your ideology demands it...then maybe you ought to look in the mirror and maybe you'll see who the bad guy really is.

The woke harp constantly about 'cultural appropriation'...isn't that exactly what THIS is?

Let me gently finish this with something another YouTuber wrote in their comment, someone who doesn't give a damn about skin color, the same as me:

"I'm an Indian. When Hollywood tells me that I can only be inspired by people that have the same skin color as me, that feels racist. I've grown up watching superhero shows whose ethnicities and lives were nothing like mine but I was heavily inspired by them. That actually feels like something that's working towards racial equality. It's bringing me and people that look nothing like me onto the same page."

If this is a cultural flashpoint, I'm praying that when the din is finally over, everything changes in the most positive ways!
