Description During the wet and windy falls, the Ghirannon dragons lay their eggs inside pink roses. When the winter comes, the flowers close up, keeping the eggs safe from the cold.
At the dawn of spring, the flowers open to reveal the hatchlings, who get to gaze upon the sun for the first time.

So this is the reason for my scarce posts lately x) It surely took some time to finish; time mostly taken from lunch breaks and after works, since I both work full time and study.
I attempted more realistic colouring this time, mixing the rose's colour into the dragon, and the green leaves' colour into the rose. Also, the blending is a lot smoother than I've done lately, but I like the result so I think I'll continue down this path.

The picture started out as a flower study, because I realized I hadn't ever made a serious attempt at painting flowers. I had just added them like small details in my pictures before. I put in the dragon to make myself more motivated, and it kinda snowballed from there.

Time: about 25 hours?

Such a tiny little dragon!    I adore his little curled feet.  Wonderful job on the scales and details!

Thank you! ^^ Painting scales is a pain sometimes, so many details! But that's also part of why I love it, you really get to sit and zoom in and nudge the pixels, hehe.

As I've said before, really nicely done!
I really like how the dragon's laying in the flower and the use of colors. I didn't know it was such a good story behind the picture as well. It was nice.
It was a good idea to changes the color of the rose because now the whole picture looks more cohesive. I also like how you have saturated some parts but not to much.
I still think you could have made some of the scales just a bit sharper on selected or focus areas, I think it could have made them pop a little.
Otherwise very good job! I definitely think it was worth spending time on, even though I know you struggled a lot sometimes. It's fun to really concentrate on one big  picture for a while and really work on it. ^^

Thank you! <3
I'm also glad I put the extra time and effort into this. It left me kinda exhausted though, so my next few pictures will probably be quicker ones ;D

I realized this pic looks very different on different monitors. My monitor have really deep, saturated colours so it looks kinda washed out on other screens :c which is a shame.

I know that feeling and it's ok to do some sketches now and then, especially after such a time and energy consuming picture. ^^

And about the colors, I guess that's something we all have to deal with. But as long it looks good on your screen, you can hope that most of the people looking at it will see the same colors.

Oh what a lovely one. That's a really cool idea too. Great work!

Just some feedback though, I'd really encourage you to put in a stronger light source. This picture seem to be about life, and spring, so you could really have brought out those feelings with warm saturated lights. You risk losing a lot of volume in your images without keeping the lightsource in mind, and that combined with that you do a lot of details, like the scales in this picture, rather than implying some of them, that makes it feel a bit unfocused. There's no contrast to draw the eye. I can't remember, was Color and Light by James Gurney part of the course litterature for that 2D class we had in first year? Probably the best book I've read on colour and light theory.
Uh I did a quick paintover just to try and get my thoughts in order, can send over the psd. if you want it. Keep up the wonderful work

Thank you so much! ^^

Oh I agree with you. I realized pretty far into the process that I hadn't really decided where the light came from and what colour it would be. I would have had to think FURTHER out of thee picture, to the surroundings. I was afraid of messing the picture up at that point, so I kept the light ambiguous.
I have that book sitting on my desk actually! I... should get to it >__>

Yes! I'd love to see the paintover I'll drop you a note with email/skype wherever you wanna send it ^^
