Description
Santa Monica Parish Church, Sarrat, Ilocos Norte, PhilippinesWhen I arrived in the Ilocos region, one thing I noticed was the unique design of the churches that I’d never seen in any other part of the Philippines that I’d been to. This style is known as Earthquake Baroque and it was adopted after a series of destructive earthquakes during the 17th and 18th centuries. It was believed that rebuilding the churches as such with plenty of buttresses would help withstand the shaking of an earthquake. The bell tower was usually separated from the church for safety reasons. One such church is the Santa Monica Parish Church, built out of red brick in 1779.
