Description
The rogue Russian general is cornered by the Secret Agent, just in time to stop the nukes...or is it?This was my entry for the Secret Agent Challenge on cgsociety, it was a lot of fun. You can see some progress shots here
Edit: Wow thanks for the Daily Deviation!!! I really appreciate it. Thank you to everyone for visiting my site and commenting!
a note: For anyone a little insulted that the bad guys are "always the russians." This is a Cold War scenario, and the Cold War = USA and Russia. Whose to say that the Secret Agent himself isn't Russian?

This is excellent. The lighting is absolutely superb. I love the graphics on "the big board"
You should watch the movie Dr. Stangelove if you haven't already done so.

I love the obligatory bullet graze on the agent's arm. He wouldn't be a true secret agent without it.

I'm glad you like that, though to be honest that's the one thing about this that really bothers me, how its just going straight through his head like that. There was a deadline for the contest and I didn't have enough time to fix it, maybe sometime down the line I'll mess around with it and update this with a new version.

I really don't see the offence in being the bad guy xD. I'm Russian and i get flattered every time i see russian bad guys. Good guys just stick their nose where it doesn't belong anyway ;D.
And this is really great. Was this perhaps inspired by the book 'Ice Hunt' by James Rollins? Amazing book.

That rogue agent is going to feel so silly when he discovers that all his missiles failed to hit Ottawa. Of course, he was distracted when he aimed it because some guy barged in playing cowboys and Indians or something, and his two employees decided to take a nap on the job.

I think it's a shame that you had to excuse yourself for people that claimed to be offended. I am usually pretty harsh about things being offensive. but really all kinds of secret, covert operation tales and the like simply are the cold war, in our history, which was fought between the US and Russia... why is the general supposed to be evil? because he's russian and is attacking american soil, that's supposed to be evil...? it's the viewer's lack of imagination that locks them onto it. My feeling is that people are just playing out this offendedness, really.. I wouldn't know why. I think the russian guy looks pretty cool, you can see his face, unlike the allegedly american hero, the general has a human expression, I think he's determined to stand his ground when he finds himself alone holding the very last rank. And he leans on a cane but he looks like he won't give up an inch. I report no Good vs. Evil theme here.
I saw the conceptual sketches you drew before this, and I have to say I liked the previous one, where the screen in the back seemed further away from the characters and it had somewhat more dramatic lighting coming from it. But obviously there is no technical flaw I can spot at all lol... But it's the concept, the mood and what sequels it spurs in our minds that really make it stand out in my opinion.

"why is the general supposed to be evil? " perhaps cause it appears hes sending 8 nukes into densely populated areas. Just a thought... Wouldn't quite be my hero...but who knows... maybe hes trying to stop it? ;D

I don't trying to qualify the act of firing missiles at populated areas. If you could just look past your understanding of good and evil. In reality, what is offensive about the american stereotype of russian villains is not even whether or not you regard them as evil, I'm quite sure several other nations don't live by the same concept of righteousness that Americans do or even the West does. In American media, Russian villains (and many others of other nationalities) are always defeated by fundamental flaws of their own, such as they're actually cowardly or they actually can't even handle the power they wish for, and almost always they're in some way terribly inept as human beings; and never does the hero defeat them by using more violence or trickery than the villain, it is always by a fundamental trait and we learn that the villain was just bound to fail. And that is what is really very offensive to another nationality. Missiles making their way to US soil is just clearly fiction, it has not happened, probably will not happen, has no real world equivalent, but when you show someone to be less civilized or less dignified or less worthy, then it's a real world statement you're making. And in contrast, good or evil are very weak concepts, owned by no one and totally dependant on each other. To me, it feels more like what is offensive is the US map, once again, missiles darting in, which, if that's the case, it's fair enough, I would feel hurt too, if my entire culture were effectively terrorizing and alienating me and demonizing every other culture in the world.

....not really worth arguing.. most of what you say is true. Just make sure not to judge a country by its media

drowtfs In reply to Superiorgamer [2009-09-27 04:07:06 +0000 UTC]
uh, I'm sorry about trying to kind of diminish the US as a nation there, it was not my initial intention, and, most importantly, wasn't called for at all. It's no use to take solace in the mere fact that I'm not a US national and pretend like it's unimaginable for me to live with these things I'm criticizing, cuz really misinformation and misrepresentation are commonplace in every country, so I am by no means immune to this dark influence. So, again, sorry about that, won't do it again.

This is pretty cool, but it's not exactly a fair fight, would of been nice if the Russian had some kind of weapon (besides the cane). Everything else is spot on
