OOH! If you live in Maine, then you are in that part of the country that has the best autumn colors anywhere. Ours can get spectacular but not always, sometimes it's a fizzle, like 2013, a real "dud" for us. Yet the year before that was truly fantastic, I could almost pretend that I lived in Vermont or somewhere like that. We have many trees right now that look like this one in the photo. Our neighbors across the road have one that's farther along than this, it always seems to get bright color very early.

Yes - indeed Maine certainly does; I don't live too far from there myself, although we have many beautiful views around my home as well. I believe it's the maple trees among the pack that really have the most stunning colors of them all.
And I agree with you - last year the autumn seemed to be all too short, and we had our share of wet, soggy days combined with high winds, which stripped all the trees within a couple of weeks.   So I really didn't get much in the way of photographs, unfortunately. But this year I hope to get the jump on things.
I hope your fall turns out well this year - it sounds like it is so far!

Our local trees are changing fast, some of the trees are halfway there as in your photo, or even more than that. Others, I'm not sure whether they are pin oaks or what, but they have already turned a deep dark red. I haven't had time yet to go out and explore where this is happening.

I'm not sure what causes the change and the quality of color to be so different from one year to the next. Someone said extremely hot and/or dry weather conditions such as we often get in summer down here will make the reds deeper and richer. Don't know whether that is true, as in the upper Eastern seaboard states it rarely gets truly hot (90-100 degrees or maybe a little more!) and yet those vibrant reds are a certainty for you, every time, or so it would seem.

Certain maple trees tend to change color more slowly, and hold onto their leaves often well into November when everything else is bare and we could even have a soft snowfall on them. From the sound of things we could have that this year, one of those rare October snows.

I think last year's autumn was much like yours, but sometimes that is what we get, it starts raining around mid-October with lots of high wind, essentially spoiling the beauty of autumn for all. Especially those with a wandering foot like me! We can only hope this year will be much better; it looks promising so far.

Yes, I understand. We have not yet reached peak color in my area just yet - thus my lack of photographs from this weekend.  But rest assured there will be posts with this coming weekend for sure.
I agree with you on the color conditions as they relate to the weather - I think it has a lot to do with the balance of heat and humidity as it passes from day to day. Hopefully we'll all be treated to a colorful season.

It begins to look as though we will be, in this area. But it depends on weather conditions, whether we have high winds that strip everything far too soon, or too much heat which sometimes seems to cause colors to peak quickly over maybe 1 weekend, and then by the time I get a chance to go out exploring they are already falling off and past their prime. Currently the highly-colored trees are spotty, and always in an area that I zoom past in my car but there is no place to stop safely and look, and shoot pix... I live in a higher elevation, even though we are not mountainous here. My work place is in a valley by the river where it's always about 5 degrees warmer than up here. Colors out that way always seem to develop sooner than they do out where I live... We typically get our best coloration around October 20-25 in this neighborhood.

Yes, I understand completely - all that you've described practically mirrors my own situation when it comes to viewing foliage...over my way the colors come on within as little as a single week, it seems, before the rain and wind move in and strip the trees. This coming Saturday morning will likely be the one and only brief window that I get to do some photography outdoors, as after that there is rain and wind in the forecast. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed and heading to a special place where the foliage is guaranteed - albeit somewhat crowded for obvious reasons.   I hope you have the best of luck with your explorations as well.

I am fortunate--where I go it is lonely and secluded, very rural...no one else ever comes around, except the extremely rare occasion when the property owner is working off in the distance or maybe taking the grandchildren for a boat ride on the lake... Once in a while I hear rifles, and if I do I just go off to wander somewhere else! Some of the property owners won't allow hunting, but they will allow little me to pass through any time I wish.

I am seeing a lot of brownish trees but others mixed in are highly colored. Our weather has been fitful but nothing drastic yet. Very dry mostly but that doesn't always bode ill for photographers. As I say, our best time frame for color is later this month. As long as we don't have too many high winds or rough weather in general, our colors might turn out worth putting in the effort to get some new shots! I will be making the effort to "get out and go" no matter what...as I have the "gypsy blood" described in one of my favorite poems about autumn... "she calls and calls each vagabond by name."

That's an enviable arrangement for sure - what a great advantage you have! Yes, it's not that there aren't any places around where I live that have a good amount of scenery, but my area is more suburban. Basically I have to do a bit of driving to get to an ideal place - either a town forest or park. But tomorrow will hopefully bring reasonable weather and a good many sights to capture.

And yes, I hope with the later turning in your area that the leaves stay intact for the most part; wind and rain can crop up at the least desirable times, for sure. By the way, I love that quote you sent, too - I looked that up and found it; written by William Bliss Carman...interesting, I had never heard of him. He had another quote that I found to be most comforting to people like myself as well: "There is only one way in the world to be distinguished: Follow your instinct! Be yourself, and you'll be somebody. Be one more blind follower of the blind; and you will have the oblivion you desire." Words to live by!

Meh...our weather right now is just gkhgggkjtkhf *keysmashing*   it was pretty all last week during my work days (of course!), then late in the week got windy and cold, then windier and colder and finally showers, just enough to make it all gloomy and even if I was out I would have wet feet and an empty camera (and we both know cameras need regular feeding!) and maybe wind up with a cold on top of that. Can't afford to be sick when one works at a job where we don't get sick pay.

I do a bit of driving to get to the most secluded area in this neighborhood, it's only about 1 1/2 miles away but if I am pressed for time I drive there and park at a friendly neighbor's home. Driving saves my energy too, I can jump out of the car and be in the woods area in 5 minutes...then spend most of my energy on hiking! The weather may improve again later on, and allow me to get out and live up to my online ID name

I love that second Carman quote you gave here, certainly words to live by for folks who march to a different drum beat. I had not been aware of that, although the poem about Autumn has long been a favorite of mine. In fact I never knew the author was a man, I thought Bliss Carman was a woman! Bliss for a first name would be nice...
