I failed at this so badly xD Now I'm sad that I wasted some clay....

chat-noir In reply to cowlufoo [2012-07-31 23:30:06 +0000 UTC]

;_; I'm sorry to hear that. There really isn't such a thing as wasted clay, I use scrap clay to make larger sculptures that will be painted. Plus there is a great tutorial on DA where you use 'mess up" clay to make cans and other projects. Don't give up!

Hellu~ I'm pretty new at using and working with polymer clay and I was wondering.. After you bake the polymer clay, is it really recommended to glaze it? And thank you so much for the cute and easy tutorial~

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chat-noir In reply to xBAKURA-star [2012-07-10 23:50:05 +0000 UTC]

You're very welcome.

After an item is baked it does not need to be glazed.

Glaze is helpful if you want a shiny item, or if you have painted your charms after baking, it is more like adding a clear protective coat.
This is all optional. You can leave the item as is, or there are tons of ways to polish and buff polymer clay items to get them to shine.

Thank you for letting me know c: I've seen a lot of people glaze their works and I was just wondering. Another question.. Is it okay to glaze the works with clear nail polish instead? I have some lying around that I really don't use at all. I'd like to make use of it xD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chat-noir In reply to xBAKURA-star [2012-07-14 14:19:06 +0000 UTC]

Yes, you can use clear nail polish to glaze charms. The only downside is that enamel isn't flexible, so it might chip or flake off after a lot of wear-and-tear.

xBAKURA-star In reply to chat-noir [2012-07-15 22:43:18 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. n.n Are there other things that you can use to 'glaze' the charms or is it mostly just clear nail polish and the glaze spray for polymer clay?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chat-noir In reply to xBAKURA-star [2012-07-16 02:27:49 +0000 UTC]

Yup.
-You can buff and polish items by hand
-Use clear Resin
-or (I use) Triple Thick glaze (available in most craft stores)

I hope this helps

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

xBAKURA-star In reply to chat-noir [2012-07-19 23:47:18 +0000 UTC]

Oh, most certainly c: For the buffing, what do you use to buff the items? I've recently made two small charms, a lollipop I'm planning to paint, and a strawberry, and they're just sitting on my bookshelf XD

Again, thanks for taking your time to help a fellow newbie to polymer clay

u could use some sandpaper and a denim rag(or any other old piece of cloth)to polish it to a soft sheen

chat-noir In reply to luminaret [2012-05-19 19:21:01 +0000 UTC]

So far I have had nothing break off of any of my chocolate charms. Adding a protective layer of glaze after baking helps keep fine details attached.

one question, can you bake eyepins?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chat-noir In reply to Bubbathefox [2012-01-29 03:52:12 +0000 UTC]

Yes, you can bake eye pins and headpins in the oven. So long as they are made of metal, they shouldn't give you any problems. There -are- some hypoallergenic finding out there made of plastics and those are -not- oven friendly, but pretty much anything metal is oven-safe.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Bubbathefox In reply to chat-noir [2012-01-29 13:26:10 +0000 UTC]

oh, and i thought because you cant microwave metal, you cant bake it..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chat-noir In reply to Bubbathefox [2012-01-29 19:31:34 +0000 UTC]

That is true. Metal and microwaves are not compatible. Polymer clay is meant to be baked in a convection oven (like your normal oven) or a toaster oven. It is -not- microwave friendly.
