Description
This is Sutter County Courthouse as it was in 1900 before all those palm trees got huge. That’s right, back when the world was orange. Now you can’t hardly see it from the street view, but it’s still there. If you look the other way, it’s about 500 feet from the tumultuous Feather River, which they put up a large levee to keep from overflowing, so I’m painting it in a really bad year, but maybe not as bad a year as the disaster year of 1955 (documentary with photos ) . This is beautiful Yuba City, and if you’re wondering what a ‘yuba’ is, it’s spanglermaniss (see? fun new portmanteau for xander’s californio relatives ) for ‘uva’, which means grapes, and John Sutter was all about forts and skivvering gold but it was another guy who took his name for the famous Napa winery Sutter Home. Yuba City is the county seat, and the courthouse was completed in 1900 after two previous courthouses which had mysteriously and not-so-mysteriously burned down in 1858 and 1871.I’ve always been interested in the history of the establishment of a court in this wild gold rush territory of California anyways, and there’s a good article at the California Supreme court historical society how we got from alcaldes taxing zorro’s weight in gold every day to the 9th circus. It’s an interesting read, and I do have to point out, California’s first chief justice had excellent excellent hair. Look at those soft flaxen waves. If I’m not mistaken, he was basically Wolverine when he was younger, and then went to the Xander-do plus a huge ‘stache when he got gray . Good hair. What is it with all these old hot california daguerrotypes ey? Look at anyone on the California Supreme Court today (Josh Groban is on the california supreme court?) and tell me Serranus Clinton Hastings wasn’t a smoldering serrano chili pepper in comparison.
I don’t know what this has to do with comics .

Holy Follicles, The Honourable Serranus Clinton Hastings really DOES have impeccable hair - he looks fit for a shampoo advertisement!

I love that saturated little bit in the left corner where the light is catching the foreground.
Lovely work, as usual!

Painting the courthouse before the palm trees got huge gives a better view and the view is better painting it before the folded plate roofed building was wedged between these. Hazy orange tint and dark billowing clouds give the sense this one too will meet it's fate in flames

I'm altogether too fond of orange and keep failing at integrating it in the yellow range, but this I think moved a bit closer to what I'd like to do with this. I'll get there eventually. I was itching to paint architecture this week, it's been a while. I didn't even really notice that weird zig zag roofed thing between them until you mentioned it. What a horrible addition to a lovely architectural site! who approved that monstrosity I wonder?

I google earth walled the alley behind the buildings and the razor wire topped chain link fence behind it suggest the folded plate roofed building is inmate housing. After 25 yrs of doing construction drawings for county jails and suspecting in this sense CA is no different than MI people do not want to spend money on criminal housing and politicians want to make it look like they hadn't.
I'll be watching for your orange into yellow idea, sounds interesting.

thank you! I'd love to paint the Notre Dame, actually I've got one half started from a few years back, maybe I should pull it out again and work on it.

I'm not sure there's much difference between the Alcaldes and some members of the 9th.

it's surprisingly hard to find their pictures actually, I thought there were seven of them? or do they rotate?

The lighting in this is amazing! I really love that affect you got in the foreground being unfocused a bit it really makes the building stand out.

thank you! the poor buildings look a bit like dollhouses to me, and I was hoping that by unfocusing the foreground I'd lose a bit of whatever scale was throwing off my sense of distance. It worked, but not completely. I wonder how to address that issue?

I don't think they look like dollhouses. It's funny how we're super critical of our own art! The only thought I had was maybe a little bit of some texture on the bigger building would've helped? But I don't do landscapes or still objects often so I'm not much help there! I just think it's beautiful. So jealous of your clouds!
