Story: 598 words.
The journey to find the human child's tribe had been fruitless. Wandering from place to place, the graying tundra dire male with puppy and child in tow, had become something of a legend. Good hearted people left out food for the trio, and often attempted to coax the boy to join their families. The child however, refused to be parted from his tokota, and she steadfastly stayed by Romulus' side as they traveled through the unforgiving snow covered mountains. They headed roughly Northwards, skirting the frozen peaks of the superiors,
The boy, like all humans, was completely incapable of communication, constantly jabbering away incomprehensibly. The puppy’s baby yips and whines were not much help either. She was just too young to express much more than basic hunger, fear, happiness and displeasure. A complicated concept like where they were from, and how they came to be alone in the mountains of Tokotna was far beyond her. This aimless wandering was getting them nowhere, Romulus decided, he needed some guidance. Guidance would have to wait for dinner though, the pup was whining again, and Romulus decided he could use some fresh meat himself.
As if on cue a majestic white stag stepped out of the woods ahead of them. A monster elk, the massive multi-tined antlers looked like they could reach almost to the dire tokota’s shoulder. It seemed not to see the tokotas, and strode regally through the open meadow ahead of them. Silently, Romulus attempted to stalk closer, but the elk, while never running, always stayed far enough ahead to make a charge fruitless. Never taking his eyes off his prey the graying tundra followed cautiously. He did not need to look behind, to know that the boy and puppy trailed close enough to not lose sight of him.
It was a strange procession through the frozen white forest. The elk, as white as the trees around him, lead the massive dire on in the deepening twilight, its hooves never breaking through the crusted snow. The heavy tokota plowed a shallow path as he followed through the icy forest, his wide paws packing the snow firmly for the bright red puppy and her human boy trailing behind. A ruined statue watched the odd parade with empty stone eyes; no other creature disturbed the eerie silence that cloaked the scene.
The sound of a waterfall in the distance caused Romulus to pause. Ahead of them the trees were dark silhouettes against the rising moon shining brightly on a still lake. The stag however, stepped onto the surface of the water as serenely as if it were frozen solid, striding calmly across. His bright reflection glowing on the water nearly outshone the moon. The mystical glow drew Romulus’ green eyes to the water. His previous hunger was forgotten as he stared at the reflections, which changed as he watched into images that moved and shifted in the water.
The huge dire did not feel the child and puppy as they curled against his side, exhausted. The story the vision in the pool relayed, of a migrating tribe in a vicious blizzard held him rapt. He saw the red puppy fall from a sledge, the child climbing down to rescue her. The blinding snow that sent them stumbling in the wrong direction, obscured their trail from the frantic adults who discovered their loss far too late to find them. A tiny cave, little more than a badger den sheltered the little ones until the storm passed and the melting snow drove them out to be found by their gigantic savior.
Romulus now realized where they needed to go.
