Description "Kids Interest?" Really? So all the manga/anime/game fans out there are "kids?" Nice

Saw this at a Borders the other day (after reading that Otaku USA magazine! dude! Fruits Basket!)

I laughed and was somewhat annoyed by this at the same time. It always bugs me that anime/manga/games and animation are thought to be for kids by the general public. I've come across this several times, even within my own family. Animation, games, and Japanese shows/comics are not just for kids! Just ask the hundreds of teen and adult cosplayers and the teenage/adult people I always see in the manga section of that same Borders!

I admit I used to think anime and manga stuff was stupid I know right! me! But then I gave it a chance and now its one of my obsessions! If a lot of the people who think this way actually gave this awesome genre of entertainment a chance, I bet they'd be surprised!

So to all my fellow fans out there, I'm sorry people are like this and keep loving animanga! And to those people who think like this, well, ur wrong. Some of us may be kids at heart, but we're not kids!

p.s. u can tell I'm in between drawings right now. Thats always when I start uploading Motivational/Demotivational Posters!

Update 6/14/11: This was so stupid! I had to fight to keep this picture! I was forced by the DA staff to fill out a Permission form for this picture! And it's my picture!! I had to give myself permission to use this photo! Oh no! I used this picture without my permission! I'm gonna sue myself! Good grief, there really are some stupid rules!

update 4/21/2011: OMG!!! Look at all the comments, faves, and page views!! Thank you sooo much everyone! I love reading ur opinion on this! It's fun hearing what y'all think! I'll try my best to respond to the comments, but it may take me a while!
Hooray for respectful debates, discussion, and opinions! Y'all r awesome!

Life is way, way easier when you stop giving a rat's ass of what people think.

I like what I like, that's all. I don't care what they like, and expect everyone to reciprocate.

Reminds a few years back I got somewhat annoyed that somebody was laughing at a guy in my class for wearing his naruto head band around his neck, saying that their little brother liked that stuff and it was for kids. There are certain anime and manga's for the younger generations but probably more than half of it, you could say is too old or sometimes inappropriate for the kids, so it definitely shouldn't be labeled as kid's interest.

I totally agree.
It happens to me all the time. People think I'm childish for watching anime, while what I watch is easy to tell that is not for children. Plots tend to be a lot more complex and complicated, that a 8 yeas old kid would not understand at all.
Even my family think of me this way and think I'm weird for watching anime. That's why I always have to lie them to go to a convention, or can't have my room full or pretty anime stuff :/

Sad but true. People should get into into before saying anything.
I used to hate it, until I tried. Now it's my addiction and I wouldn't leave it for anything.

People see animation and think children, completely neglecting the fact that the Simpsons, South Park and Family Guy are three of the most popular shows in North America and are all ANIMATION!

I laugh because even "children's" anime (like Card Captor Sakura) had to be censored back in the day because they were too controversial. Anime is anything but for children - with all the violence, fan service, swears and complicated plots.

In Chapters they have two sections for manga: young adults (so anything 16+) and the teen section. I found Zone-00 in the younger section when it's filled with penis jokes, panty shots, violence, nudity and as close to hentai as you're going to get in a non-hentai. Silly people.

DeadSweet In reply to EvelynAdams [2011-04-20 17:39:58 +0000 UTC]

Well, in Japan, that's how they categorise it. I don't think it's an issue of them not getting it, but being lazy and assuming that the Japanese standards are the same as in the West.
Card Captors was only censored in the regard that they stopped Mai (Forgive the spelling, if it's wrong) from being Li's cousin and being in love with him. And to be fair, incest is pretty looked down upon here, you don't really want kids thinking it's okay to kiss their cousins...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

EvelynAdams In reply to DeadSweet [2011-04-20 17:52:51 +0000 UTC]

They also censored "Rita"'s love for Mr. Terada (changed it to intimidation), Li's infatuation with "Julian", "Tory" and "Julian"'s relationship, "Madison"'s love for Sakura, and her mother's love for Sakura's mother (that's really why she hated Sakura's father).

Same with Sailor Moon, Fish Eye and Zoisite are both men but were changed to women and Uranus and Neptune were lovers, not cousins.

I can understand the censors to a degree, especially for the time they came out, but if they'd just aired them later like they do now, kids wouldn't have been affected.

But I get your point. Japan is a lot more accepting of "strange" plot devices in their media than North America, so to put them on the same level is stupid. But even still, I don't think anime should ever be considered - regardless of the country - "children's interest" since I mean...look at a lot of it. It's not for kids XD

DeadSweet In reply to EvelynAdams [2011-04-20 20:52:14 +0000 UTC]

I've watched the subbed versions and I never picked those things out. I remember Madison "Loving" Sakura, but I always thought that was more of a friendship thing. Although it was quite a while ago that I watched it. Hm, perhaps this calls for a re-watch...

Yes, I watched Sailor Moon as a child and found it quite funny that I'd missed so much of what was actually happening.

Yeah, I think it's an honest mistake on the part of the American shops, but they should be screened and labelled a little more carefully.

Seriously, I see and get this all time. Most recent example, two nights ago I was watching Princess Mononoke with my sister and her boyfriend, and my dad comes out and says, 'Watching cartoons again? Are you ever going to out grow those?' I said no and went back to the movie, since Princess Mononoke is full of beautiful and awesome.

I get the same response whenever I try and show him my artwork, so I don't show him anymore. Kinda sucks....

Noolin In reply to Lavanah [2011-04-21 01:04:02 +0000 UTC]

My mum shook her head and sighed when she saw me watching princess mononoke. She came back 15 minutes later to see my brother, who had stopped to watch after someone got their head shot off with an arrow and my dad, who started watching after seeing giant wolves eating things, both sitting down watching. Hell, even she started watching after that.
It still remains the only anime that my family has ever even given the time of day and remarkably we watched it together. It has achieved the impossible for me XD
If you could get your dad to watch it somehow, maybe it could work wonders for you too!

It sucks that your dad says that about your art... You should say that Garfield is a cartoon drawn by an adult, for adults. ;D

yeah, it's rather sad. I can't wait for the day that it bites the general public in the ass when parents figure out just how much not-kid-oriented material is in the world of anime/manga.

I once saw some man at the library with his 6, maybe 7-year old son and he picked out a Yu-Gi-Oh manga (wanna say 1st or 2nd volume). I just snickered thinking, "dad, open that book. I dare you."

Well, to be honest anime like Gintama or Gurren Lagann were kids anime in Japan, which is not a bad thing though. But you should note that even kids anime deal with strong emotions, violence and sometimes even sex ! Japanese media has a very different mentality if it comes to those thing in comparison with the Western media.

I am not an expert if it comes to Japan, but I do know a lot of things and have seen a lot of anime.

But yeah, I really hate it if people still think that Animations or comics are only for kids ! Western comics have the same problem !

As an anecdote, my library has the first anime DVD from NeonGenesisEvangelion in the children section ! Think about that !

The picture was taken in a bookshop that we have in the UK, we have Borders over here too.
And in the UK we have dedicated anime shops, there's quite a popular one called forbidden planet. I suggest you check it out if you're having trouble finding what you want.
Also, in Japan, anime is for kids.
Over here it isn't, because we have different laws about the content shown to certain ages.

Eadyu In reply to DeadSweet [2011-04-20 18:50:11 +0000 UTC]

really? O.o none where i've been, and i've looked a lot of places
the only manga i can find is a small selection at waterstones (overpriced) and anime at hmv (limited)
where's forbidden planet? is it london? 'cause if it is then i might be able to check it out sometime, or in Reading, even better, but if it up north, then nope
i was always under the impression it was for teenages, but there are some for kids- you wouldn't show something as dark and grousome as d.gray-man or full metal alchemists to kids, would you? Its like the common misconception that simpsons is for kids, despite all the adult humor
i know about our laws, its just annoying that the uncensored ones aren't shown somewhere else, thats all *shrug*
(and sorry for any spelling mistakes, i don't type too well )

DeadSweet In reply to Eadyu [2011-04-20 20:57:44 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I'm pretty sure there's on in London. They're a chain store, so I think there are ones all over the place.
Well, not over here, no. You wouldn't show most of it to children, but culture is different everywhere. People do things differently.
Yeah, I know what you mean, I think it's an honest mistake though. The shopkeepers just assume Japan has the same laws we do. I'm sure if the popularity keeps rising, they'll do something about it when they realise.
Aha, don't worry about it. I do the same.
