Description
"Kids Interest?" Really? So all the manga/anime/game fans out there are "kids?" NiceSaw this at a Borders the other day (after reading that Otaku USA magazine! dude! Fruits Basket!)
I laughed and was somewhat annoyed by this at the same time. It always bugs me that anime/manga/games and animation are thought to be for kids by the general public. I've come across this several times, even within my own family. Animation, games, and Japanese shows/comics are not just for kids! Just ask the hundreds of teen and adult cosplayers and the teenage/adult people I always see in the manga section of that same Borders!
I admit I used to think anime and manga stuff was stupid I know right! me! But then I gave it a chance and now its one of my obsessions! If a lot of the people who think this way actually gave this awesome genre of entertainment a chance, I bet they'd be surprised!
So to all my fellow fans out there, I'm sorry people are like this and keep loving animanga! And to those people who think like this, well, ur wrong. Some of us may be kids at heart, but we're not kids!
p.s. u can tell I'm in between drawings right now. Thats always when I start uploading Motivational/Demotivational Posters!
Update 6/14/11: This was so stupid! I had to fight to keep this picture! I was forced by the DA staff to fill out a Permission form for this picture! And it's my picture!! I had to give myself permission to use this photo! Oh no! I used this picture without my permission! I'm gonna sue myself! Good grief, there really are some stupid rules!
update 4/21/2011: OMG!!! Look at all the comments, faves, and page views!! Thank you sooo much everyone!
Hooray for respectful debates, discussion, and opinions! Y'all r awesome!

When I was a kid I loved Cardcaptor sakura and Though Naruto was for kid. Now I read and saw many anime and manga. Naruto is NOT for kids but yet mangas are in the kid section in our library in my town. And they even have almost hentai manga there. I mean those mangas are next to those ''this is a cat. this is a dog.'' kind of books. I mean those girls in some mangas are BIG breasts and there is blood and death and stuff for samurai or ninjas or vampires stories. Why the fuck is it in kids' section?! I think I'll go to them and SHOW them. And ask for a special section for that. :/ like adult comics and stuff. Oh well :/

Damn. Straight. There are so many people that are absolutely close-minded to the idea of watching anime and reading manga. Just cause it's animated doesn't make it JUST FOR KIDS! Hello!! AQUA TEEN HUNGER FORCE?? FAMILY GUY? AMERICAN DAD? ARCHER?? METALOCALYPSE?? Shall I go on? I know those aren't exactly ANIME, but these examples just prove my point. If they watched hentai, or seen some of anime that are rated 18+ or even TALKED with the people who do cosplay(especially the ones that dress up like the more "risque" dressed characters), they'd get a real slap of reality and they might watch it themselves. Man, I bet that if they made a FULLY ANIMATED episode of House M.D. and didn't change the dialogue or voices AT ALL, they wouldn't watch it. That is how biased these people are. Gosh, makes me wanna go postal on that store......

How is this possible when most mainstream anime/manga is rated OT (older teen) and 18+? Even shows like Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! have to be heavily edited before being aired in this country.

That's the point - In your country. The people who label these things probably assume it's the same in Japan as it is in the west, and it just isn't. What is aimed to kids there is different to what is aimed to kids here.

Yes yes, I cleared up that point already in my last reply. I'm referring to the animes that even JAPAN considers more 'mature' aka not for children, which still makes up the majority.

DeadSweet In reply to Musapan [2011-04-20 21:13:13 +0000 UTC]
No, anime aimed at children makes up the majority. Almost all of the most popular animes are aimed at children, because they're the Studio Ghibli films.
As I said, it's probably an issue of laziness, they assume the standards are the same. I'm not saying it's right, but probably an honest mistake.

Musapan In reply to DeadSweet [2011-04-20 21:39:41 +0000 UTC]
There are only 18 Studio Ghibli films to date, excluding animated shorts made by the company. How do 18 films represent the majority of popular anime? I think you're forgetting Death Note, Naruto, the Gundam series, Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, School Days, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Bleach, Umineko no Naku Koro ni, Higurashi, Lucky Star, Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, Ikki Tousen, Mushi-Uta, Girls High, Saiyuki, Hellsing, Escaflowne, Excel Saga, Lady Death, La Blue Girl, Parasite Dolls, Steel Angel Kurumi, Please Teacher, Gankutsuou, Kite, Ah! My Goddess, Sorcerer Hunters, Slayers, Tenchi Muyo!, FLCL, Jubei-chan, Wolfs Rain, Dragon Half, Angel Sanctuary, El Hazard, Vampire Hunter D, Outlanders, Full Metal Panic!, Loveless, Battle Athletes Victory, Peach Girl, Inu Yasha, Ranma 1/2, Evangelion, Read or Die, Fushigi Yugi, Ayashi no Ceres, Vampire Princess Miyu or any of the other thousands of anime titles that contain nudity, extreme violence, sexual situations, cursing, substance abuse, rape and whatever else is included. The aforementioned animes all contain at least one or more of these elements. (Most of them more.) And I could list hundreds more, but that would take me too long.
How many children's animes can you name, now?

DeadSweet In reply to Musapan [2011-04-20 22:32:55 +0000 UTC]
Death Note can't even be rated a twelve under Japan's system. Neither can Lucky Star, Inu Yasha or The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. They are, in fact, aimed at children, or very young teens. Which IMO are children.
In order to be rated a certain certificate, it has to have more than one attribute of that certificate, it may even have to have all of them. Violence, sexual situations and cursing only merits a twelve certificate. Substance abuse is an eighteen. Unless the rape is actually seen, as in penis-going-into-whichever-orifice, it's a fifteen.
DBZ, pokemon, digimon, one piece, FMA, Sailor Moon, Cardcaptors, Bleach, Naruto, and gundam all contain the aforementioned, and are FOR children. Hell, Cardcaptors even has incest in it.
Look, whatever you say, it still remains that in Japan, people make anime for children. That is it's main audience.

Bloodrealm In reply to DeadSweet [2011-05-30 17:49:36 +0000 UTC]
Just because they give a young MINIMUM rating, doesn't mean that is the intended audience.
He listed 49 (FOURTY-NINE) right there, too. You said "Almost all of the most popular anime" were by that studio. I'm not certain of what Studio Ghilbli even IS.

DeadSweet In reply to Bloodrealm [2011-05-30 18:46:36 +0000 UTC]
And I listed that sixteen of those shows didn't even get a twelve rating. I thought this was a large enough sample size to demonstrate my point. Hell, some the shows I mentioned were even deemed suitable for viewing by children in the UK/US, and aired on children's cartoon channels in in the after-school slot. If this isn't marketing it to children I honestly don't know what is. Oh, and ever notice how the protagonist is almost always a child/teenager? Yeah, that's so the target audience feels involved and can relate to them.
Spirited Away is the most successful and highest grossing movie ever released in Japan. It even overtook Titanic in the box office. There is such a thing as google, too. I promise if you learn to use it, the deficit in your knowledge will be filled.
And I think you've misunderstood my point. MOST anime is for children/teenagers. Not all, obviously. The studios making it don't need you to defend it, they're making it FOR children. They know this. Why can't you accept it? Take "The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy" For example, you don't see fans of the show claiming it to be aimed at adults, because it had violence, blood, guts, gore, adult humour and them hanging around with an animated skeleton. Because it's not aimed at adults, it's aimed at children. This is the same with most anime.

Bloodrealm In reply to DeadSweet [2011-05-31 17:02:29 +0000 UTC]
Except MOST aren't for children, they're for "Teen" or "Older Teen", and that deserves recognition. When someone says "Kids' Interest" or "Children's" they mean about 5-13, not 5-19. That's really the point here. Trying to prove me wrong simply because you're prejudiced when it comes to people under, say, 20, then you're just too stubborn to look at it in the way that even most companies and rating systems do. Laws even differentiate between them.
The protagonist is almost always a teenager because you have all the character development involved, and because that is the way the mangaka wrote the story. These authors aren't just greedy corporations out to make a pile of money regardless of anything else. They write things they want to write, the way they want to write them. You can't just assume things because that's the way marketing schemes work.
You're also forgetting that we're talkign about both manga and anime. You haven't said a word about anything on paper, the way almost all of it starts out.
I also hope will forgive all the arguing here.

Because people in America are pussies who give PG 13 ratings to family films.
Pokemon and Yu Gi Oh were NOT highly edited before hitting America. Homosexual undertones are cut, as were guns from an episode of Pokemon, an explosive device from Yu Gi Oh, and other things like that. But this hardly warrants "Adult Oriented" material. The fact that it is edited does not mean it's aimed for an older audience. This is a myth commonly believed by fanboys and fangirls who don't want to admit that they are watching Children's cartoons.
Editing does not imply that it is being cut for content either. Things are edited for time, for example. Digimon remained mostly uncut in America because it fit the time slot perfectly, for example.
Sure, there is Adult Anime. Hellsing. Cowboy Bebop. But even things that are quoted as being "For Adults" is aimed at the 12-17 audience, like Sailor Moon or Dragon Ball Z.
Unless your part of the same idiotic crowd that decided "Whale Rider" was too much for kids because a pipe was seen in the background, you really can't say that having Guns, Alcohol, and explosives makes the show adult. And that's what is being cut, along with homosexual undertones.

Musapan In reply to ComradeNewski [2011-04-20 20:35:13 +0000 UTC]
You forgot to mention the sexual situations that were cut from Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh!. (If you'd like me to list examples, I will.)
However, I wasn't implying that Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! AREN'T made for children. They were. In Japan, they are 'children's cartoons'. But Japan has a higher tolerance of what is appropriate and not appropriate for their children than we do here; hence the editing in America. I'm sorry for the misunderstanding on that part.
But anime, as a whole, is NOT targeted at children. The majority of them are targeted at 15-21 year olds. I do not personally think that having guns, a little blood and alcohol makes a show/movie 'adult', (After all, that's classic Disney in some cases!) but what I'm referring to is more than that. Sex, nudity, excessive cursing, gore, and other adult situations are things you can usually find in most anime. My mother made the same mistake that the above deviation is suggesting; thinking all cartoons are for children, and knowing that I liked Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z, she bought me 'Devil Hunter Yoko', because it looked like an exciting adventure anime. I watched it with my friend when I was 11, and I saw my first sex scene.
That was the point I was trying to make. Even Fruits Basket, which is a cute, fluffy shoujo, has sex jokes, cursing and adult situations. While a 13 year old would most likely have no problems watching it, you can't tell me it was 'made' for a 7 year old.

Our bookstores needed a tragedy, when a 12-years-old girl hanged herself writting on the walls that she's going have a "better life with Alucard" to understand it, and move mangas from kid's shelves. Of course it made them way more difficult to find anywhere, but they're slowly returning to sale.

lol i remember reading those magazines...xD newtype usa i miss reading now :/ dang them for npot making it anymore ....especially since newtype is still published * original japanese newtype not the newtype usa*
all i have to say is......honestly what we get here in america is usually butchered for anime....watch the subs of the anime and theres a ton of stuff they cut out...sometimes its little sometimes its alot
lol id like to see what they would do to an anime like Seikon no Qwaser to make it appropriate for American audiences...
and theres already a censored version of that anime really makes the story awkward as it just skips alot of scenes
i guess what im saying is im at the sub level now....wich imo is alot better then dub. voices sound better, once you get used to the subtitles and the pace you read the whole dialog that's being presented way before they finish saying it and continue watching, its uncensored so it has everything the way they originally made it, and sub you get to watch the new anime as they come out, about 99% of which will most likely never be brought over..as only the most popular get brought over. i also just want to admit there are some good dubs.
still though even though they butcher it, its still not appropriate for kids xD
levels of anime imo
anime is for kids--> anime is awesome --> i cant believe i actualy liked dubs
also for those that dont know..
dub = made so they speak your language
sub = original language with subtitles
/endrant XD

Well technically a lot of the material we in America and other countries that aren't Japan or in asia (except China) are actually children (8-10) marketed shows. One Piece, Naruto, Inuyasha and lots more all fall under that category. Mainly because or censor standards and the material we view acceptable to kids is very different from Japan.
But I doubt that's what that book story is doing. Very funny though.

They're labelled as this because in Japan they're for kids. No one else really watches anime, hell, even then kids don't really watch it. You know the annoying late night TV ads that a lot of channels have? That's when most anime is broadcast in Japan. And you're considered a bit of a wierdo if you're an adult and you admit to liking anime/manga. In the west it's different, obviously, but it's probably easier for them just to put them in the same categories.

There is seinen, manga for 20+ males, and josei for 20+ women.
