Description "Kids Interest?" Really? So all the manga/anime/game fans out there are "kids?" Nice

Saw this at a Borders the other day (after reading that Otaku USA magazine! dude! Fruits Basket!)

I laughed and was somewhat annoyed by this at the same time. It always bugs me that anime/manga/games and animation are thought to be for kids by the general public. I've come across this several times, even within my own family. Animation, games, and Japanese shows/comics are not just for kids! Just ask the hundreds of teen and adult cosplayers and the teenage/adult people I always see in the manga section of that same Borders!

I admit I used to think anime and manga stuff was stupid I know right! me! But then I gave it a chance and now its one of my obsessions! If a lot of the people who think this way actually gave this awesome genre of entertainment a chance, I bet they'd be surprised!

So to all my fellow fans out there, I'm sorry people are like this and keep loving animanga! And to those people who think like this, well, ur wrong. Some of us may be kids at heart, but we're not kids!

p.s. u can tell I'm in between drawings right now. Thats always when I start uploading Motivational/Demotivational Posters!

Update 6/14/11: This was so stupid! I had to fight to keep this picture! I was forced by the DA staff to fill out a Permission form for this picture! And it's my picture!! I had to give myself permission to use this photo! Oh no! I used this picture without my permission! I'm gonna sue myself! Good grief, there really are some stupid rules!

update 4/21/2011: OMG!!! Look at all the comments, faves, and page views!! Thank you sooo much everyone! I love reading ur opinion on this! It's fun hearing what y'all think! I'll try my best to respond to the comments, but it may take me a while!
Hooray for respectful debates, discussion, and opinions! Y'all r awesome!

In my country book stores don't label things like that. They are more inclined to label books/comics/mangas for what they are about: example: we have a HISTORY section, a COMIC section (some book stores make the distinction between manga and comic, as all should in my own opinion), a DRAMA section... you get the idea. I think the only exception for this is that there actually is a section for books that are clearly for kids below 12 (I think) and books for teenagers. Mangas either have their own section or their are simply labeled as comics.

It's usually like that where I am, too, although smaller bookstore outlets just pile it in with "Teen" instead of the proper genre, with larger stores having a section for manga/graphic novels.

I feel your pain, actually, I've always loved anime- but I've always hated the pre-conceived notions about it.
Not that I can judge, we all have them about somethings.
All I can say;
Someday, a kid will pick up JUST the RIGHT issue of Otaku USA, with just the RIGHT amount of racy comments and near nudity, and it will never be seen in the children's section again.

pokemon
sailor moon
digimon
ect...those are kids anime HOWEVER
Black Butler
Yu Yu Hakusho
XxXHolic
those are more teen based anime then everything else (includes Fruits basket due to mild swearing) but seriously??? WE ARE NOT KIDS!!! simple intersted in kick ass anime.
but I admit this was funny...it just shows that some people aren't too good at orginizing.

Firstly, I miss Borders.
Secondly, while I agree it's annoying that people think that animation is purely for children, in their defense, a lot of anime has a demographic aimed towards younger people. I'm not saying all of it but of the series shown in the picture, there's nothing there that would really mentally scar a child. In Borders, the likelyhood is going to be that this appeals more to children than adults and thus, they'll just plonk it in the kids section. It's not really generalising the anime/manga genre as a whole, just those magazines, which, in all fairness, are aimed at young people. If there were magazines full of hentai there, then yes, that would be a different story. I dunno what it is but it's especially prevelant with anime/manga where people seem to be in denial that a lot of what they watch is actually aimed at children in Japan and in the west too. Again, I'm not saying all of it but a lot of popular anime falls into this.
Anyway, in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't really matter. It's a lot easier to just accept that some people will always see animated shows as childrens shows, regardless of whether they are filled with those silly shoujo magical transformation scenes that are repeated in every single episode of whatever or if it has people being brutally murdered and then strung up on tv aerials.
My passion is animation and I'm proud of it. I don't care if anyone thinks it's childish. I love watching a good animated show regardless of who it's aimed at. The Last Airbender is very much a children's show and it is one of my all time favourites.

yeah, especially since a typical anime magazine can have hentai-like images inside
one of the magazines I have has an ad for anime girl figures in tiny clothes and sexy poses :/
sure, its not as bad as hentai, but there was still a lot of crotch-shots
not good for the kids D:

If an adult, such as a normal 50-year-old, saw this in adult's interests, I'm sure he or she would be very offended. This is where this stuff belongs, really, if there is no "teenage interests" section.

If I managed Borders I would do the same.
Those big eyes that fit half their face and all those bright primary colors... it's definitely geared towards children so I would categorize them as such.

Sure, I like a lot of kiddy things but I can still see that its for kids. I know there are much more complex and deep anime/manga out there but for those magazines you took a picture of, its not the case.

It is an easy mistake for the older generation to make in North America. Cartoons were largely created for children and even in some very popular anime/magna are still largely pointed towards children. (grammar fail)

However (through my speculation and probably made up history.) anime/magna started becoming very popular in japan and spread like wildfire from there. Though much of the 1990 and up see it has real entertainment i am often made aware by the older generations that "cartoons are for kids".

Yeah, she didn't find it funny, but she did learn a lesson that day, that she forgot a week later.

The book store near me used to have the Fullmetal Alchemist Manga in the kids section. Never mind that the first few pages are a young kid with HIS ARM AND LEG CUT OFF BLEEDING ALL OVER THE FLOOR. They changed it to 16 and up now though, which is good.

Also, a lot of places put the Yugio manga in kids section, but the manga isn't nearly as kid friendly as the anime. A man burning alive is not kid friendly, and neither is two main characters going around flipping up girls skirts and calling themselves the panty wagon. Or discussing how if you squint while watching porn you can see past the mosaic.

Though the Yugio one is a bit more forgivable because of how well know the kid's show version is, at least, the English version.

The DVD I saw was the one of the last episodes, with the picture of Lucy with the music box. So the cover image does not give the contents away right away. But the age rating was still printed on, I have no idea how they missed that.

They only think Anime is for kids because of the more popular shows like Pokemon and Yugioh, but last time I checked, Hyper Dimension Neptune is more for teens, unless kids are maturing quickly and liking underboobs -_-
Imagine if they were selling Elfen Lied in the kids section of a video store XD
