Description "Kids Interest?" Really? So all the manga/anime/game fans out there are "kids?" Nice

Saw this at a Borders the other day (after reading that Otaku USA magazine! dude! Fruits Basket!)

I laughed and was somewhat annoyed by this at the same time. It always bugs me that anime/manga/games and animation are thought to be for kids by the general public. I've come across this several times, even within my own family. Animation, games, and Japanese shows/comics are not just for kids! Just ask the hundreds of teen and adult cosplayers and the teenage/adult people I always see in the manga section of that same Borders!

I admit I used to think anime and manga stuff was stupid I know right! me! But then I gave it a chance and now its one of my obsessions! If a lot of the people who think this way actually gave this awesome genre of entertainment a chance, I bet they'd be surprised!

So to all my fellow fans out there, I'm sorry people are like this and keep loving animanga! And to those people who think like this, well, ur wrong. Some of us may be kids at heart, but we're not kids!

p.s. u can tell I'm in between drawings right now. Thats always when I start uploading Motivational/Demotivational Posters!

Update 6/14/11: This was so stupid! I had to fight to keep this picture! I was forced by the DA staff to fill out a Permission form for this picture! And it's my picture!! I had to give myself permission to use this photo! Oh no! I used this picture without my permission! I'm gonna sue myself! Good grief, there really are some stupid rules!

update 4/21/2011: OMG!!! Look at all the comments, faves, and page views!! Thank you sooo much everyone! I love reading ur opinion on this! It's fun hearing what y'all think! I'll try my best to respond to the comments, but it may take me a while!
Hooray for respectful debates, discussion, and opinions! Y'all r awesome!

Wow, I've never been into a Borders where it was labeled that way. Where I live, the manga section at Borders is just labeled "MANGA". XD

this actually the magazine section guess I should've put that in the description! oops!

Yeah, I know it's the magazine section. I guess I didn't read through my comment carefully enough before posting.

Stereotypes like this are so typical. I guess when most people think of anime, they're like, "You mean Pokemon?!?" like that show 'defines' anime. And most people I know find that show aimed at kids.

But stuff like Fullmetal Alchemist is hella gory and violent. I would not advise that series to any young child.

ikr! Just because it's one of the more popular series doesn't mean Pokemon is the official representation of all anime! It's just one series!
and yeah, so many series like FMA, Vampire Knight, even Naruto are gory! in fact, it seems like Pokemon is one of the few anime series that ISN'T gory or sexual at all! lol! not the best representation! lol!

xMimameidx In reply to Checker-Bee [2011-05-08 16:29:13 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I still consider it a kid's anime. But I can name you a LOT more shows that would NOT be kid friendly in the slightest.

I think what the main problem is that many people like to lump anime in with American cartoons because it's both animation. Here in the USA, cartoons are looked at as geared for children, and people might make the same assumption about anime.

And you can't forget that in America there is a place called ADULT SWIM, which most of the time has CARTOONS aimed at ADULTS. So no, not even cartoons are all aimed at kids.

Just wanted to share that.

sure it's for kids, they show that when u glow and can transform power in a big fox, u have to be carefull
depends on the age u set for a "kid" but i would say kid is from 1-14 14-18 is teen
and when i'm back to 13 i would love to watch animes. when i was that age there ware cartoons .. gargoilz, extreme dinosaurs, darkwing duck, mumies alive and all that
u see more blood in the news then in most animes and realy important people don't die there often.

Bloodrealm In reply to Dark-MinaZ [2011-05-25 15:37:05 +0000 UTC]

You obviously don't know most series, then. The majority of manga are quite bloody, gory, and/or NSFW. The most popularized ones in english are usually the ones that are more tame in that sort of way, and that's where part of the stereotype comes from. Even BLEACH and the DragonBall franchise, which actually are more popular in english that others, have large amounts of blood (So does the manga version of Naruto, which is the only decent version, really).

Checker-Bee In reply to Dark-MinaZ [2011-04-26 21:13:27 +0000 UTC]

Ikr? I'm always oober careful when I turn into a big glowing fox monster! Thank you Naruto! lol!!

Yeah, I guess it's all about personal choice and parental supervision. I guess I was a sheltered child cuz the most anime I was allowed to watch as a kid was Pokemon! But now that u mention it, a lot of cartoons are pretty suggestive these days. Like I said, it's all up to the parents. I guess one of my points is that they should be careful what they label as kids stuff. But then there's the whole debate about how much is too much censorship. Do kids need a little suggestive or violent content as they get older in order to gradually adjust to the amount of violence and suggestive content there is in adult programming or even the real world in general? Or is exposing them at an earlier age causing the content and violence? ....u could debate that all day! It's a tricky issue!

true thing
but as long i know 12 year old that try to beat me at counterstirke or unreal tournament , i doubht that anime is more "violent".
how you raise your kids is a thing of the parents. all those "rules" and u can buy this game when ur 18 .. they don't get anywhere. for example i got gta vice city (2002) when i was 13, and i still don't walk around killing hookers just to get my money back.

i would say, as long as u see countless stuff in the tv that is real, animes and co don't affect u that mutch. But still, i didn't cry when caprio died in titanic .. but i cryed the time ace got stabbed by the flamedude.

but yup, youre wright we could talk all day and it woudn't change anything. i just would remove a lot of the strict "u have to be that old to buy that game" stuff, since they totaly work in the wrong way. Oh look a game for guys over 21, i wana have it! sure my 10 year old son go ahead. ..

*animez are cool 11elf*

You obviously either aren't a fan, or you don't know anything besides mass-marketed, sensored adaptations. Most manga are geared toward older teen/adult audiences (plenty of violence, blood, and/or sexual things). It's actually a lot closer to the other way around, really: there are many more mature manga than "kids'" manga, but it's a huge stereotype everywhere outside of asia that anything that isn't live-action is "kid stuff".

But yeah I live in a hick town and, with the exception of a few fellow otaku when people know what anime is at all they either think of Yu-Gi-Oh! or tentacle hentai. Gah!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Bloodrealm In reply to JohnnySwift [2011-05-30 17:01:50 +0000 UTC]

I am SO glad you said "jk".
And what they don't know is that even Yu-Gi-Oh!, in the very first season (season zero), which wasn't aired in english, was actually excessively violent, with Yami-Yugi either turning someone into a drooling braindead zombie with a "penalty game", or outright killing them with the consequences of losing... there was even a bloody chainsaw mass-murderer in the employ of Seto Kaiba! So the joke's on them! Even their stereotype example is wrong!

The worst insult you could ever tell a teen is to tell them that they are, indeed, young.
In any case, none of those titles were marketed towards adults. Minor and kid are interchangeable to me.

Tarthesos In reply to Checker-Bee [2011-04-21 08:07:07 +0000 UTC]

What? ... Wait a moment, that is not a good point!
First of all if a manga would not fit is age, he should not be able to buy it from the start. (be careful, I do not blame him for attempting buy it, I remember how I myself was when younger)

Here the only point is ... since most of people are so stubborn and stuck with the "Kids Interest" stuff, when they saw "something that is not for kids" they censor it!
But hey! I will be clear ... that is stupid!

Is possible that this "something that is not for kids" don't put a single doubt that this manga is not for kids? Really someone are able to think that in Japan this "something that is not for kids" is for kids?

Is for that I think censorship is bullshit, kids are kids even in Japan and if something is not for kids you simply have to not sell it to kids.

In the best case, censorship is something you have to do because someone is unable (or so idiot) to do his job properly.

P.S.: Now is time for apologies ... Sorry for my terrible English language, I only hope it is understandable

And actually more often than not, in Shonen Jump especially, there's lots of stuff that is generally not kid friendly...Say, blood, language and the like. There's a reason it's rated for TEENS.

It's the misconception that if it's a cartoon, it's automatically aimed at kids just because of it's medium. Which is something that still annoys me. A TON of anime and even a bunch of American cartoons are not suited for kids. I wish people would get rid of that stereotype.

Well, I kinda understand.... mainstream anime in the US started on cartoon network and was heavily censored, and while many of us are fond of anime like sailor moon and dragonball, those are anime produced for children in japan... I think that's where the stereotype started in the western hemisphere

Had they introduced other anime like evangelion on TV [and on another channel not intended for children] I think that the perspective today would be very different

I also think that english dubs make the characters sound like disney movies... the voices used for 'cute' female characters are extremely annoying... I still have nightmares about those Cardcaptor Sakura Dubs *shudder*

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Bloodrealm In reply to Hoto [2011-05-30 17:20:49 +0000 UTC]

Haha, right. For children in japan... DragonBall (not DragonBall Z, but the original) had several more mature jokes in it, and the original japanese Sailor Moon, so I am told, was 100% completely uncensored (huge amounts of nudity and swearing).
But I do think you are right. When they first localized anime in english, the networks on the recieving end thought "It's animated, it's for kids", and started steering things that way.
