Description "Kids Interest?" Really? So all the manga/anime/game fans out there are "kids?" Nice

Saw this at a Borders the other day (after reading that Otaku USA magazine! dude! Fruits Basket!)

I laughed and was somewhat annoyed by this at the same time. It always bugs me that anime/manga/games and animation are thought to be for kids by the general public. I've come across this several times, even within my own family. Animation, games, and Japanese shows/comics are not just for kids! Just ask the hundreds of teen and adult cosplayers and the teenage/adult people I always see in the manga section of that same Borders!

I admit I used to think anime and manga stuff was stupid I know right! me! But then I gave it a chance and now its one of my obsessions! If a lot of the people who think this way actually gave this awesome genre of entertainment a chance, I bet they'd be surprised!

So to all my fellow fans out there, I'm sorry people are like this and keep loving animanga! And to those people who think like this, well, ur wrong. Some of us may be kids at heart, but we're not kids!

p.s. u can tell I'm in between drawings right now. Thats always when I start uploading Motivational/Demotivational Posters!

Update 6/14/11: This was so stupid! I had to fight to keep this picture! I was forced by the DA staff to fill out a Permission form for this picture! And it's my picture!! I had to give myself permission to use this photo! Oh no! I used this picture without my permission! I'm gonna sue myself! Good grief, there really are some stupid rules!

update 4/21/2011: OMG!!! Look at all the comments, faves, and page views!! Thank you sooo much everyone! I love reading ur opinion on this! It's fun hearing what y'all think! I'll try my best to respond to the comments, but it may take me a while!
Hooray for respectful debates, discussion, and opinions! Y'all r awesome!

LOL and some anime/manga aren't for kids. My family freaked out when I showed them an anime that had violence in it.

ikr?! I think the only animes little kids should get to see are ones like Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Studio Ghibli. Only when they get older should they be allowed to watch the more violent stuff. But that's just my opinion.

Right! Wait til the see deathnote, innocent venus, berserk, highschool of the dead, sun-ken rock and many other anime/manga(I've read/watched to many to remember). I bet they wont keep to the idea that its just for kids.

I'm 14 now and I've been into manga and anime for years(and I'll still be in years)(I didnt get the plotlines untill I was 11) )I'm not very open about it either but my brother is also an fan of that stuff but only more mature stuff and I think my mom knows. My sis got me and my brother into manga and anime which I thank her for even now and I'm planning on doing the same for my little brothers they are both 3 and one of them is all ready into pokemon and loves power ranger samerai (I know its not anime but I'm hopeing that its a sort of gateway thing)so yay for that!

thats exactly how I feel! I used to be like anime? whats that? like naruto? psh, thats stupid. but then I actually have it a chance and I loved it, (yes, even naruto) lol I feel like if more people gave it a chance and actually realized that anime actually has a plot and developed characters/story line, unlike 'cartoons', then they would love it basically, anime=awesome

totally! I had the same attitude towards anime and especially Naruto, like when kids at school would wear the headbands, i'd be like, "what the?" but then Naruto ended up being the first series i really got into! dontcha love how that works? and now I'm starting to get one of my best friends into it. She went from not liking any anime, to being obsessed with Fruits Basket, Ouran High School Host Club, and even going to an Anime Convention with me next week! hooray for influence!! Hooray for Anime!!

Anime is not just for kids. There are plenty of people (Adults and teens) that love anime/manga. Not that I have a problem with being called a child (I'm 16) but Adults can love Anime too. I do agree there are some anime/manga's that are more for the younger kids but also a lot of anime deal with issues that most reality t.v shows or soap operas wouldn't even touch. You can really learn a lot from anime. I know I have and I'm proud to say I'm an Otaku (: And I know that when I grow up I'll still love anime/manga!

I know what you mean. I was talking to my aunt about how I like anime, and she said "Oh yeah, last Saturday we put on CN at midnight to help your cousins get to bed (they're 7 & 10) and there was a cartoon on, and someone's head got cut off!"

Needless to say, I facepalmed.

She had watched one of the early episodes of Fullmetal Alchemist, and, well, we all know how that's not really for kids...

I saw someone see me looking in the manga section of B&N, and they went up and asked me why the comics weren't closer to the kid's section. I wanted to punch that bitch. So I showed her a page from pervy part of Soul Eater, and she asked me "Why is this in a child's book?" I swear to God, some people are so fucking ignorant...

1st part: Oh no, she judged all Anime based on one violent scene of FMA? I mean, I love FMA, but don't u hate that? honestly, i was like that at one point cuz i watched one episode of Inuyasha where a pig guy kept kidnapping girls and asking them "Will you bear my children?" kinda weirded me out! but man oh man am I glad I didn't let that ruin anime for me forever! btw, yes, i was kind of a sheltered sensitive child! lol!

2nd part: are u freakin' serious? Comics don't automatically mean kids section! Illustrations, animation, and words in a font bigger than 12 don't automatically make something aimed toward kids! both western and manga comics are, contrary to popular belief, usually mature content and aimed toward teens and adults! I hate when i feel like people judge me for liking manga while being a 20 year old adult female! i wish they'd just let people like what they like and respect the fact that not everything with pictures is meant for children! rawr! lol! can u tell i'm a little passionate about this?

Hey, you're not the only one passionate about it. It annoys me to no end when people think that just because something's a cartoon or comic, it's for kids. I've been heckled about it every time I go to pick something up from the book store. My own sister does the same to me. I try to explain it to people. The worst part? They won't ever listen, and they won't understand. It's stupid and ridiculous.

i'm sorry people heckle you so much. just keep being who you are and liking what you like. People who can be themselves despite the ignorance of others are admirable Power to the Otakus! Power to the Fans! Power to the confident people! Power to the people who over-use phrases!

Anime/manga really isn't for "children". Though I suppose you could consider "teens" the same as a "kid?"

Even so I know plenty of people into anime/manga that are 18+.

Honestly there are a lot of things in Naruto that young kids wouldn't get. Fruits Basket... I suppose younger kids could see it, but there is still a lot of more teenage focus.

My dad has (or had as he no longer cares) the opposite idea about manga. He thought it was mostly porn and graphic violence.

He didn't (and still does not) care about the violence, but he'd skim through each volume I bought to make sure it was "appropriate." Now he doesn't care. That means more sex and violence for me.

They had a how to draw hentai on the table BLANTLY in the children section where the TODDLERS had easy access to it in my library before.
That disturbed me.
All the manga were in toddler reach. They even had a /teen/young adult SECTION/ and the mangas were in the kids section. The attendant saw me get a manga(ChibiVampire) and asked "Are you here for your little sister" I told her no the manga was for me."Aren't you a little old for that kids stuff."My jaw dropped...I walked over to a copy of naurto and asked her,"Have any of you actaully looked trough these?""No"...I opened up the to goriest page I could find and showed her..Her jaw dropped.<3
That took care of that library. Now their in the Teen/Young adult section.<3

It's too bad that you don't feel comfortable enough to let your family in on your interest. It's kind of strange how so many people just assume that something is made for kids if it's animated, or in comic-book form, or fantasy, or science fiction...when in fact, all of those things have a massive amount of material aimed at an older audience or contain things that it would take a mature mind to understand/comprehend.

And even if something LOOKS totally cute/innocent and for kids, doesn't mean it entirely is, or is at all. Even if the ratings system says so. Take Naruto for example. I can imagine someone thinking "It's a popular kid's show with ninjas right? That's fun, isn't it? I'm sure the kiddies would love this-Hey, what's this "Sexy-no-Jutsu" stuff?"

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Checker-Bee In reply to A-Spirit-of-Roses [2011-05-16 08:11:09 +0000 UTC]

i think they're kinda on to my lil secret, but I don't think they get the extent of my interest. I was drawing a chibi of axel once and my brother saw it and started teasing me, saying i should go work for "Pokeymons" and saying "Ali, I choose you!" Since then, i haven't really been to open about everything. Someday maybe, but for now, i just keep it to myself...and my friends!

and seriously, i know they censor the sexy-no-jutsu, but kids aren't that dumb! ha ha! And all the violence and the fact that Kakashi reads porn! lol! Don't think the kids can tell thats porn tho, thank goodness! i guess it depends on how smart the kids are too!

I always hate those misconceptions. Comics, anime, and Disney aren't just for kids! teens and adults love em' too! That's one of the reasons i love DA. i feel normal here!

A-Spirit-of-Roses In reply to Checker-Bee [2011-05-16 18:10:32 +0000 UTC]

I suppose they might get away with thinking that the porno-books are just romance-novels.

When it comes to comics (this includes manga as manga ARE comics) anime, Disney, (and animation in general) I honestly think that a lot of the stuff that people think are made for kids really are not exclusively made for kids. Sure, they might be okay with showing something in a kids' show, like sexual innuendos, blood, violence, etc...but WHY put adult-themes in a kids' show if you weren't also intending for adults to enjoy the series as well?

I'm an adult and I love all those things you listed. For example, the last movie I remembered buying was Disney's Tangled (Love it!). We're a community of people around 14-and-up, yet just look at all the fanart. Just pick a show or series, any show or series, and you can almost feel the love that people have for it.

u make a good point. I suppose they put the kids label to attract more viewers. like, I'm cool watching a kids show (despite the fact that I'm almost 20! ) but if they stuck an Adult label on an animated show, I'd probably avoid it.

i love the love for the series here on DA! like I said, it makes me feel normal! Like Tangled (OMG FREAKIN' LOVE THAT MOVIE!! ) I still squeee at the Paper Lantern Boat song scene! And I squee whenever Roxas comes on the screen in "Kingdom Hearts" or when Naruto sticks up for the other Jinchuriki! they're all so great!

Hey, I'm 21 so I understand what you mean there ^_^. Although, it it had an adult label, I wouldn't avoid it. It would all just depend on whether I think it looks good and interesting or not. (this goes for all ratings, from kid to adult and anything in-between.)

There seems to be something of a debate here as to whether the majority of anime and manga are aimed at kids or not. So some people say that most ARE for kids, because of the Japanese ratings' system and how it's more tolerant of stuff like violence and sexual situations. And then some people are saying that most of it are NOT aimed at kids because of the violence, sexual situations, complex plots, etc.

Could some of them (not all. SOME) be given a lower age-rating not because they're specifically aimed AT kids, but because it would be okay for kids to see them?

Personally, I don't think one is ever too old to enjoy something they love.

Luckily, my family seems just fine with me enjoying manga and anime. Even my dad, who I assumed would be of the 'animation is kiddie-stuff' said 'Cool!' in genuine interest and respect the first time he saw Cowboy Bebop on tv. (Yes yes, I know...US English-dubbed made-for-tv version, but whatever)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Checker-Bee In reply to A-Spirit-of-Roses [2011-05-15 07:48:19 +0000 UTC]

that has become the debate hasn't it? America does more censorship than Asia and Europe, so its not surprising that we think its inappropriate. I guess I'm still on the "keep kids innocent...at least until age 14!" side, but hey, some countries are ok with exposing kids to more mature content earlier. I guess its all up to the parents.

and man! I'm jealous! I don't think my family would be all that supportive if they knew I watched anime and read manga. they know somewhat of my love for Kingdom Hearts and Disney and they know I love to draw, but i don't think they know I read Ouran High School Host Club, Vampire Knight, Naruto, and other mangas and animes. Idk how they'd respond, so I just don't tell them Its not that I don't trust or love them, but I just don't think they'd understand why i like what I like.

true that! its so annoying when people generalize without taking the time to understand. At least they're starting to call some western comics and mangas "Graphic Novels." that sounds a bit more mature than "comic book" and ..."kids interest" ha ha!
