Double Dee had been about to whip around and give Eddy a LOOK that would have spoken volumes for him... if he would have dared to make any noise he would have scolded him fiercely on the dangers of surprising someone when they were on a staircase – he could have fallen down and severely injured himself! He'd been about to turn back around and hurried them both down the rest of the stairs when the tell-tail rattle of a door opening alerted Edd to the danger they were in.

He froze for a few moments, holding his breath. There wasn't any sound and Edd almost thought they were safe when the faint murmuring of voices and then the shuffle of feet had his stomach plummeting. He reached out and grasped Eddy's hand, pulling him forward and accidentally making him stumble. He caught him as best as he could, tripping down the rest of the stairs to land in a heap with his friend. He squirmed frantically, disentangling limbs, his breathing coming in short, frantic bursts.

“Sorry.” he hissed lightly as he pulled Eddy up and shoved him around the corner, out of site from the stairs just in time to have the hall light flick on, illuminating the anxious boy in a beam of bright, yellow light. He choked up, standing straight as a rail, hands set firmly to his sides as he looked up at his father, who stood at the top of the steps.

“Eddward? What are you doing up?”

“Y-Y-Yes Father? Oh! I was... I woke up and was thirsty. I thought I might make myself a glass of warm milk to help me get back to sleep.” He clutched the edges of his shirt, knuckles going white. He was lying to his father, oh god he was lying. If he found out...

“You're still in your play clothes?” He didn't sound overly peevish... but he was suspicious.

Double Dee tried his hardest NOT to look over towards where Eddy was hidden around the corner. “Yes... well. I fell asleep while I was reading a book, I'm afraid.”

There was a few moments pause, and then, “Well. Alright, son. Hurry up and get your drink, then head back to bed.”

“Yes, Father.” The light flicked off, leaving Edd blinded. He remained rigidly standing where he was, listening as his father shuffled back into his shared bedroom. It wasn't until he heard the click of the door closing that he collapsed in a trembling, quaking puddle on the ground.
