This might be a stupid question, but how do these 'adoptables' work? I get that you pay points for them, but is it for the design or something? I don't understand..

this question is not stupid at all.
you pay for the design of the adopt, and only you can use that design for your oc. some adopts come with names, ages and background knowledge which you also own.
