Description
< Previous | Next >Tenga hadn't really had an opinion on the idea of he and Kena going to The Nook to entertain the kids for a day to give that poor hatchery lady a break. At least not at first. It had just been another thing to do.
Ever since moving in with Kena there were a few things like that, like the chores he'd gotten used to the landlady taking care of at his old place. But because it was with Kena it also never felt like a chore.
Just a thing to be done.
Maybe he should have known he'd tilt one way or the other, if previous experience was anything to go by. But he liked to live in the moment. And right now, walking side by side his beautiful and kickass lady to the other side of town, it was a pretty good moment to be in.
The hatchery mum had welcomed them inside with a smile that was just a tad too wide to not be relieved and showed them to a large open play room with a bunch of little squirts running around.
Tenga had been immediately tackled by the more eager ones, to which he happily reciprocated the rough housing. Gently of course. So much so some of them whined that he was going easy on them.
A full body laugh had taken over at that and he’d hefted a few of them up onto his shoulders and arms. Meeting his own bellow and mixing in with the squealing giggles of the kids was a tinkling chime of a laugh that instinctively had him look over his shoulder in an ingrained hope to catch the sight to match. Sure enough, there she’d been. His black and white goddess surrounded by kids, she even held one to her chest as she laughed.
His heart had given a tremendous thump at the sight. Somehow it was different than how he usually looked at Kena (which was often so he’d know) and while he struggled to put it into words or label the emotion he just knew it was because of the smaller additions around her.
Maybe it had been the low oxygen to his head from running around but for a moment the kids looked black and white, maybe some blue. Even better, he’d thought.
Okay, so that had been longing. Although he’d decided to label the general mix of feelings here as ‘I wish those were mine. Ours.’ Followed by a soft heartfelt, ‘Flick’
After that Tenga ran around for the kids to chase.
Eventually the little things were tired out, although disturbingly it took longer than he’d expected considering how much he had to work to gain his stamina. It was kind of amazing really.
Some of the kids had even fell asleep on him and he’d realised he didn’t really know how to put them down without waking them, which spurred on a brief moment of panic. Was this it, were these kids his now? Did he have to go home with them until they woke up?
Then he’d realised, they weighed next to nothing so he settled down for the long haul as he just… let them sleep in his arms. Yep, that peace of mind had come too quickly… he didn’t actually care if got to take hope a kid did, he?
Then again… another glance at Kena and he realised, sure that’s an idea buuuuut…
And that’s how they came to be on the couch some days later. The sun setting through the window behind them to bathe them both in warm light. Tenga had chosen this time and location for that exact reason actually, because she looked gorgeous in it.
But also, hopefully, he didn’t look so bad either. He just felt he needed every bonus point he could get right now.
You know, seeing as how his girlfriend was hiding her face in her paws with a building blush and flustered mumbles.
To be fair, he had just opened with, “Let’s have an egg!” He’d been too excited. He’d completely forgone the half-baked speech he’d tried to come up with over the last few days. He’d seen her and recalled the memory at The Nook and there was no holding back, sue him.
“Hey I’m not that ugly am I?” He’d chuckled, running his claws through his loose hair. He knew she liked it when he wore it down like this so there was no way the answer to that question was yes. But it served its purpose.
She started to giggle.
“Are you laughing at me now?” his grin grew at her amusement of him, pleased and relieved. He gently held her wrists between his claws, just so she knew he was there even if she couldn’t see him by how she still hid her face. Looking past his own worry he’d totally messed this up, it was super cute.
“I’ll have you know I’m serious, very serious. This is my serious hair,” he went on and rubbed the side of his head against hers so his hair tangled.
Kena’s small giggles spluttered into something unhindered as her paws dropped and she pushed one into his shoulder, “Stoooop.” He knew she didn’t mean it if he really wanted to keep rubbing his hair into her for whatever reason but he had bigger fish to fry right now.
He pulled back and gave her a moment to collect herself. He kept his expression easy, mostly. The grin was a little bigger than casual he’ll admit. And he waited.
Eventually her head titled up just so and her eyes met his. See he’d already made sure his face was chill just for that moment. He tilted his own head slightly the side, a silent prompting ‘So?’
Tenga watched as Kena’s expression went through a planned journey of its own. The flustered bluster from her initial reaction finally faded into a touched fondness, then a longing and happiness. Something he could easily label as a ‘yes’ as if she was seeing the scenario play out in her mind. But then it dripped off her face like a candle flame melting away the wax into a lesser version of itself. Pain and hurt and fear and every manner of horrid emotions he’d stepped through with her when talking – and sometimes not talking, just experiencing – her past.
“Oh,” he breathed, feeling immensely stupid and regretful. No matter how excited he was he should have thought for a second-
“It’s okay,” Kena cut his inner tirade short. She’d probably seen his thoughts in his face, boy now he felt heat rise to his own cheeks.
“No,” he insisted, running his clawed digits over his snout like it would rub the idiot from his mind, “I should have considered that…” He didn’t need to say what, and he certainly wasn’t going to needlessly tug at memories by doing so. He knew how much even vaguely referring to trauma could hurt.
“Maybe… but the you part isn’t the problem,” Kena said and his eyes flickered up to hers again, only to catch them flickering away with a paw to her mouth again. He started to grin once more, another teasing joke forming on his lips.
She probably sensed it coming as she continued, “I want to try. I’m just…” her other paw went to her stomach area and his own dropped with a sick feeling.
But the teasing energy had already built up so he settled for a playful elbow to her shoulder.
“How about we adopt first, see how it goes?”
The idea came out of nowhere and was out his mouth before he could process. Had he learnt nothing? He didn’t realise he was outwardly berating himself for the second slip up of the night by smacking his palm into his forehead on repeat until Kena grabbed his arm with both of her paws to stop him.
She waited until he looked at her, so he could see her own smile. Not crazy and wild but... genuine and encouraged.
“Okay. Let's try.” 7/5382
