The amazing thing is, even after having the heartwood of its roots carved out, this tree still lives.

I never thought of it like that. Now I have a whole different perspective on it.

I am just glad that these big trees remain. The logging companies taught us a very valuable lesson. You can't just take it all and leave nothing. Fortunately, they were stopped before all the big trees were gone.

This drive thru path between the roots affords tourists a perspective on how huge these ancient arbors really are. This tree is over 3,000 years old. There are others which are even older. Some sequoyahs are over 4,000 years old growing deep in the backcountry where tourists do not go.

In the Smokies, we have many big trees, but the ones in California dwarf them. The oldest trees here are hardwoods about 400 years old. We had more than lumber companies after the trees. A blight killed the Chestnuts, some of which were over 1,000 years old.

I am glad the redwoods survive. Thanks to the efforts of the Park Rangers, these trees will likely be growing for a long time to come, until they die natually of very, very old age...

Trees FTW! If you want critique, I would just say it seems a bit plain in the way the photo was tooken. It feels like it's lacking something within the picture, say an extra shadow or puddles, clouds, the stuff you can't always control basically.

But maybe it could be a persons shadow or some random object that's large enough to be seen on camera, but still give it a bit of an eerie, complex effect.
