I don't know if you have any idea how fucking cool this is. Not only are you 100% right about this needing to be remade, but you are ALSO the creator of the coolest Chrono Trigger fan art ever. This piece entirely demonstrates the change in attitude that a remake could and or should have, and it's wonderful and modern and relevant right now, but it respects the original, and I love it.

Well, here's my logic.

1) Chrono Trigger is one of the best games, ever made.
2) Chrono Trigger is, however, one of the least appreciated games ever made. Fans of modern RPGs have no idea that most of the content in their beloved games is only possible because Chrono Trigger did it first.
3) Chrono Trigger, unfortunately, got slammed in the face by Nintendo, which severely cut down on the quality of the translation, due to deadline rushes. Because of this, it really deserves the chance to be reexamined. There are a lot of translation things that could be improved, and there are a lot of plot points that could be conveniently improved and made deeper in order to tie the game more closely into Chrono Cross (and any future titles in the series) and also to give this game even more meat on its bones.
4) Chrono Trigger, while being epic in every capacity, unfortunately has designs done by Akira Toriyama. This isn't such a bad thing nowadays, but back then, he wasn't so much creative, as much as he was a sell-out hack. I personally think that taking another scratch at the characters, their original designs, their personalities, and applying this research and insight to making new, better designs that make more sense and are simply more relevant to modern gamers, as well as respecting the fans of the original, would really push this game's art direction to another level. That is to say, a good level.
5) Chrono Trigger, with a deeper and even more in depth and explorative story, with a beautiful translation, excellent writing, more events and side quests to round out the story, better art design, next-gen graphics, a balanced and slightly improved battle system, and excellent voice-acting, as well as orchestrated music, would literally be the perfect game. Nothing would be too changed, and it would be polished up real nice.

So I think that a remake would give Chrono Trigger and the Chrono series in and of itself new life, something that is really necessary if we ever want to see any sequel.

Them's pretty words partner, but that only leaves me even more sceptical about a full remake, seeing that the only game I can think of (off the top of my head) that I actually felt that one upped the original in every way possible is Resident Evil. While a remake in the same vein would be perfect for Chrono Trigger, I'm really unsure whether they could actually pull it off. The safest bet would probably be a DS enhancement incorporating anything and everything they didn't get to do the first time around, perhaps add a new era or two...

but yea if it weren't for the track record that most remakes have, even among Square's own properties, I'd totally go for your idea. Especially now in a time of increasingly escalating budgets I really feel that remakes are a dying race, especially for games that aren't really flawed to start with.

You're right enough, haha. I know that whether it would happen isn't really part of the equation... but I mean, imagine if it did. I agree 100% that REmake is the best example of a game that improves upon the original in every way. I would also like to nominate Metroid: Zero Mission for honorable mention, along with Final Fantasy III DS and Tomb Raider: Anniversary.

Remakes are, unfortunately, a rare breed. I think one of the nicest things about art (and I do view games as such) is that you can interact with it, learn from it, use it to solve problems, etc. It's not just this static thing. Unfortunately, game developers see games as done once they are published and marketed. I think that we'll reach a point where the trend is to re-evaluate what's been done before, and hopefully that will not only give us clearer vision for the future, but also produce some really quality remakes of old favorites.

Despite all the lofty and somewhat pointless rambling in the last paragraph, I will say that I disagree with you on one point. Specifically that Chrono Trigger isn't flawed enough to deserve (need) a remake.

Just that it's excellent. It's confusing as hell, but it's fun, and there are different story paths you can take, and a really good ending and great music. So... check it out!

I don't think they could recapture the charm and wonder they managed to craft into this game. Even the direct sequel wasn't quite as good. (Not bad, in my opinion! But not as good)
