Ae-ri lived a privileged life with her father working as a very successful investment banker. Though her parents tried not to spoil her too much as a kid, they made it known to her from youth their expectations of her. Most of her other relatives, like her father, were skilled in their own way. Working jobs with high wages or as well respected scholars, they were a family of high achievers with a good image and high social standing. After being drilled for so long, she soon became a very focused and serious individual from a young age.

She often had trouble getting along with kids her age in the neighbourhood when she was little due to her strict attitude. Most little kids being full of dreams and whimsical in nature, Ae-ri was the polar opposite. Often taking their remarks way too seriously, she was always shooting down little girl’s dreams of being a princess or fairy. Noticing her child being ostracized by the other girls and boys, her mother quickly signed her up for various lessons and club activities to keep her mind and body busy. She also gave her advice, telling her to observe how the other kids played and to keep mindful of her words to get along with others and keep the family image up. Taking the words to heart, she quickly caught on to what other people would react nicely too, becoming the well-mannered young girl that other mothers envied.

Though she worked hard to achieve her best at all her ballet recitals, tests and music lessons, she couldn’t help but feel she was doing it for her parents’ approval rather than herself. Though she liked being rewarded for her hard work, due to her father’s busy schedule, the only way it seemed to her to get her father’s attention was to bring home all the awards she could without being a bother. Closing her heart from a young age, she worked hard to become independent as to not cause trouble to her parents.

At a rare family holiday together to Canada as a child, Ae-ri found joy in ice skating. Upon her return to Korea, she began to go to the ice rink monthly and soon enough, she was going weekly. She watched many figure skating videos, feeling a pull towards the sport, to ask her mum for figure skating lessons. Quick to pick up the skills and with an edge from her ballet training, her mother soon switched her lessons from small classes to a private coach. Ae-ri’s passion for the ice burned brighter with each day as she felt her ability to express herself on ice grew as the days passed. She felt that this was her calling and dreamt of representing Korea in the Olympic Games.

Her parents soon grew wary of this as she dropped the rest of her lessons to focus on figure skating purely. Her grades started to drop as well as she was often too tired to study after training. When confronted, she spoke of her dream. When they reacted unfavourably to her goals, she stormed out, shocking both of her parents. This caused a rift between them. Though they let her keep training, for now, they gave her benchmarks for her school results which she had to achieve or they would ban her from going to the rink. Devastated, she could only work harder to satisfy her parents’ high expectations as well as her own for herself.

They slowly came around as they watched her work relentlessly, often fighting sleep as she studied and turning down invitations from friends to hang out. Watching her perform with renewed eyes, they began to support her whole heartedly. Wanting to give her daughter a stronger chance, an acquaintance recommended Seungri College when it came time for her to graduate high school. Being wealthy, the tuition fee was no issue and immediately enrolled her into the school. Entering a school filled with only athletes, Ae-ri’s competitive spirit drew out even more as her pressure on herself to succeed continue to grow.
