Description
More of the same. Ive been working on this model off and on again, getting it ready for animation. Fixed a ton of polygon errors, re-rigged it and ran it thru a different renderer.Related content

Hmmm....I think some more details would be great...it looks just...I don`t know...to flat or something?
IΒ΄m joking This is amazing
I don`t think I would have the patience to do such (very impressing) stuff^^
Keep it up

lol - thanks. Someday Ill actually texture it and then it will at least look complete.
And its not really patience... Modeling pipes and machines keeps the voices quiet

Awesome . Maybe u don't have time, but a little question, did you start modeling it from blank & imagination or you make some detailed drawing & get working follow those drafting result? If freely model come out like that, it's awesome. If it was from some blueprint, awesome, too.

I always have time
This actually started as a bunch of sketches. First I started really loosely to find the overall shape (silhouette) I liked, then I began to refine the design piece by piece, first figuring out how the joints worked, then how the frame held it all together, and eventually down to the little details. A very good deal of the design was done in 3d as I was building it tho - sometimes a design on paper doesnt work as well as I hoped, so I modified it to fit the design. I used lots of reference photos from old steam trains too.

I couldn't possibly stomach the immense patient it requires to model.
It has a a lot of details and very interesting to look at and explore. Would love to see it with texture and animate.

chiaroscuro In reply to Hypenate [2009-01-14 15:19:34 +0000 UTC]
I always start with sketches, then very low detail models to get the shapes right, and I just keep refining the details until Im happy with the result

Let me say my favourite English Word:
Awesome
I love the fact, that this is really heavy-armed not like other "Heavy" Robots with just one single weapon... Maybe you can put something (a big bomb to place somewhere in enemy territory?) on the lower side of the model (good to see at the bottom picture)

chiaroscuro In reply to B0073D [2008-12-28 13:15:55 +0000 UTC]
Oh yes, it will happen eventually. Right now Im still trying to get the animation right for it tho. Im probably not going to UV Unwrap this model tho, just since the geometry is pretty awful in some areas, and most of the texture coordinates have been long since lost from translating this mesh thru several 3d apps over the years. The way Im planning to light it, I think I should be able to get away with mostly procedural maps - The way it will be lit will be somewhat dark, with lots of highlights to show off the contours. It looks good in my brain anyway

This is one of my favorites that you've modeled. (I used it for my wallpaper for a while too!)
As for the procedurals, you can still pull some pretty amazing stuff off with procedural.
Cant wait to see this in action... Will you be joining the dA movie bandwaggon and uploading it here?

chiaroscuro In reply to B0073D [2009-01-07 16:26:41 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I love procedurals. Well, I used to anyway. In Lightwave they are the most amazing powerful surfacing tool I have ever used, but the procedurals in 3D Max are pretty sad by comparison. And yes, if I ever actually get around to rendering an animation of this thing out, Ill definitely be posting it on DA. Been meaning to upload my old demo reel for a while now (its good for some laughs)

Must say, that might be the most detailed 3d-model I've seen. You might want to put a standing human scetch next to it just to give some sence of scale . Awesome work!

BlackTowerOfTime In reply to ??? [2008-10-31 10:05:13 +0000 UTC]
very nice work. it remind a bit on steampunk but some things show it is more kind of modern future mechanics. will the robot get a outer shell or shield like things around him later? Maybe could looking cool have a open shell of shields were all the interiour can be seen trough the slits and space between ?

chiaroscuro In reply to BlackTowerOfTime [2008-10-31 14:25:44 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! I love steampunk stuff, its very inspiring. The robot will have some type of shield, but it wont be covered with armor. The robots function is more like artillery - it doesn't get close to the action

yeah the kind of thing i had in mind is more a hull, but extended and open for heat and air flow. It only look like a a conglomerate of "shield" like things Just didn't had kind of armour in my mind.

Welcome back!
HEhe, for the ROBOT, I mean. ^_^
I started watching you mainly because of this robot, itΒ΄s great to see youΒ΄re working on it again.
Do you plan on adding textures around it, someday?
GREAT work, yo!
What program are you using there, 3Ds Max or Maya?
See you around!

Hey man -
Thanks! I do indeed plan on adding textures to it sooner or later. Right now I am building a low-poly animation rig for it, and working out some storyboard ideas... Planning a ~1 min animation with it
