Ah! No that's not it at all! 
Animar is actually Colu's brother. They aren't related by blood (obviously) but they've grown up together since they were very young (note the sketch of Animar as a Charmander with Colu) and each considers the other family. Animar is very protective of Colu. And because of that, he and Chickpea don't get along. Animar believes Chickpea is a danger to Colu, but Chickpea believes the reverse of that. And because of this, they often get into fights.
They both really do have Colu's best interests at heart, but it's their fighting that often causes the most damage.

True, but I was worried you had jumped to the conclusion that Animar was romantically interested in Colu, and that just isn't the case!
