Description
SUPPORT SOMBRAFUNDponies in this comic may appear different from how they really are, Twilight Sparkle is a real nice pony in real life.
-----------------------
yeah i know im sorry...
i just had to make something about the 'lack-of-Sombra'
im not complaining, i thought the new episode(s) were awesome! but the spoilers (even if i didn't see much of em) made it less interesting
but if your villain gets less screentime than GAK...
i had this idea and changed it a lot to make Twilight look less... 'bitchy'. for the people who now think that i think that Twi is not nice, i love Twi and i think she's an awesome and nice pony
i wasn't sure about the style i was gonna use for this comic, so i went with what i did for 'gak.png'
no sketch and chibi
this suddenly got more and more attention... i was like 'no way... it can't be... i didn't even send it to them... i will have to check... thanx Equestria Daily (or whoever decided to show it to them

Ever think that Sauron in his diminished state was half-assed on Tolkien's part? Sauron didn't do much either in the trilogy after his fall in the Second Age.
Just curious.

thank you, I don't get why people say that he wasn't evil just because he wasn't in our face the whole time. He caused more fear and pressure than any of the other villains in the series so far. Not to mention he was clearly more ruthless and crueler than the others.

As someone on EqD said, they were expecting Sauron at the height of his power, not his diminished state throughout the LOTR trilogy.

I know that, but my point is that some people keep saying he was a bad villain or that he wasn't evil because he was presented in a different manner than discord or Chrysalis.

Discord came off more mischievous than evil to me and I wouldn't be surprised if the FiM team was really channeling Disney with Chrysalis. Seriously, I can't be the only one who thought her entire character screamed Ursula from The Little Mermaid. That just made her even cooler. When it came to Discord, the last character I came across who used a synonym for his name (Chaos) actually lived up to the meaning. Discord was a fun villain, though. No complaints there.
Haters gonna derp and Broken Base is a trope that effects many popular franchises.

Rewatch them when you get the chance. I assure you you'll probably start seeing Sauron in Sombra. There was a commenter below who brought up the argument that Sombra's mere presence was more than enough and that he didn't need to get nearly as involved as NMM, Discord, or Chrysalis.

oh and if he had a better backstory behind him more than just
I came, tortured people and got banished only to come back scare people and die.
although I do understand that the producers were limited to only 44 mintues.... but if they had more time I am sure they would have made sombra so much cooler

See I understand that argument that it was his presence that scared people into not helping the mane 6.... but two things
1)
I think most peoples problems was not that he wasn't evil.... it was mostly that he really didn't do anything.... we know he was bad because memories of his scared people, however all he did in both the episodes was SCARE people (scary memories, scary door) and while they did impact the way things turned out the fact, he didn't really do anythign (all he did was enter the city and dash at the crystal, miss it and then get blown to smithereens)
2)
you can't truly compare him to sauron that much because Sauron was doing things behind the scenes (the ring had a will to return to sauron and worked for him to bring it back, then you have his servants saruman, nazgul and stuff who were doing his bidding and so he didn't have to appear himself (yet he still did and kept an eye on how things were working out and actually used his power at times (mostly when frodo put on the ring) to actually have an influence on how things turn out.
So I'm not saying sombra is a bad villian just that he is nothign compared to sauron and that if he had actually done something more than scare people there could have probably been a much more interesting turn of events.

Well, Sombra still DID things behind the scenes. The fear of his memory is what kept the Crystal Ponies from exploring his castle, where the Crystal Heart was hidden. His traps were potent enough to completely immobilize Twilight. And the only reason he lost was because he didn't account for the most unlikely individual imaginable to accompany the one who actively tried to stop him. Plus, just by being there, Princess Cadance suffered for days on end without food or sleep. In a way, he had practically already won by the time the episode began, so he didn't NEED to do anything. Sure, he may not be up to Sauron's level, but King Sombra was still an effective looming evil. Perhaps in time, once people get over how little he did onscreen and take a closer look at everything else he did, they will see him in a more favorable light.

The thing is while you are right technically
I, personally, don't consider him to really DO anything behind the scenes because the fear thing and the door thing.... while they did hinder the mane 6... He had it set in before, and it didn't really do too much since they didn't seem to be delayed too much either... the only thing he was actively doing was destroying the shield.... but he was so pathetic at it that by the time he finished he was KILLED (first time that happened too)
(And also I thought it was pretty stupid of King Sombra to leave the heart at the very top with open holes on all sides.... and of Rainbowdash and Cadance not to check.... Fluttershy gets away with no blame since she's not much of a flier and Cadance should be excused since she was pretty busy with the shield... but it was wierd since they lived in sombra's castle and when twilight decides thats the best place to look she starts at the bottom where they lived and not at the top which is where Sombra most likely stayed and that no one visited at all)

I think Sombra has a great deal of potential as a villain. He enslaved an entire kingdom (and in doing so threatened peace and happiness over all of Equestria), required both princesses to bring him down and took the entire Crystal Empire with him during said defeat.
But we're not shown this; we're told this (and no, I don't consider the flashback to be showing; it doesn't add any more to the story other than a visual representation of what Celestia says).
So what does Sombra actually do during the episode? Floats around the city and looks menacing. Oh, and create black crystals. Nightmare Moon levels a cliff and enticed a dangerous creature into fighting along with (as far as we can tell) subduing Celestia. Discord warps the fabric of reality and warps the mind of our heroes. Chrysalis disguises herself as royalty and helps bring down the defenses of the capitol of Equestria, opening it up for an invasion. From what Celestia tells us Sombra has the potential to be just as dangerous as these villains, if not more so. But we never see him live up to that potential.

meeeh... now i have to read long comments...
anyways, you are right. there is a lot they could have done more about sombra. a story, more text even more appearance. but, as i said in previous comments, i think they might have had to cut some parts out due 'to much footage'

immblueversion In reply to ??? [2012-11-12 23:15:23 +0000 UTC]
I know Sombra barely had any characterization, but why does that have to make him a bad villain?
If you ask me, his greatest strength was his presence; he didn't need to do anything onscreen to cause pain and suffering. Just by being there, Princess Cadance suffered for days on end without food or rest. His legacy of fear kept the crystal ponies from finding the only thing that could stop him. And though Twilight DOES manage to find it, she was put through her worst nightmare, and even had to swallow her own pride as a means of defeating him.
By the time the episodes started, he'd practically already won. He didn't NEED to do anything besides seal Shining Armor's magic (thereby making Cadance suffer alone) and leaving a couple of very potent traps that not even the crystal ponies could manage. And the way he barely says anything, or at least explains why he does what he does, actually makes him pretty creepy.
My guess is that people were only let down because they expected this ([link] ) and not THIS ([link] ). But even though we all expected more, let's not forget that sometimes, less IS more.

Yo! Would you mind if I used this as a basis for a journal? I totally agree with what you said because before, it never occurred to me that Sombra could easily be filling a more Sauron-ish role in the two parter. I want to spread this around to any of my watchers who happen to be bronies.

anyways, you are right, sombra had already 'won' before the episode even started, but i still think they could have shown a lil more.
i also think that a lot of people were disappointed cause they expected more cause of the spoilers and stuff.

I had the same thought but Discord was also involved and my theory was that their defeats were credited solely to Celestia by the masses. What if Luna wasn't given credit where credit was due. It would certainly add more weight to the fact that Luna was contending with envy to begin with. Plus, all three big events happened 1000 ago in the timeline.

I think the new episodes was a real disappointment especially Sombra that was way belove mlp:fim standard.
We have to go back to old 80's cartoons or G1 villains to find anyone as 1 dimensional and lame as him.
While there was lots of things wrong with him, my primary objection was that you couldn't sympathize with him at all.
If I was Celestia's sister a pony that excelled at everything she did, kind wise and beloved by all, and my own work was largely overlooked I too would snap. Nightmare Moon was a natural consequence.
Discord a primordial god of chaos, chaoskampf made form, it is the perfect anology from mythology, you borrowed the Q from Star Track, and combined him with the soul of Loki on ecstasy. He is diffidently an interesting and multidimensional character that you can write lots about.
Finally we had Chrysalis and she was a true beauty. She was a threat to Equestria and all its ponies, but she did everything out of duty to her own starving people. I would go so far as to call her noble.
And then they give us Sombra, Johnny Test's Dark Vegan is a better villain then him.

its true that almost everyone has better views on other villains.
but i also think that if they had given him some more lines and appearance, he would have made a great villain.
i also think that lots of people were expecting to much cause of all the spoilers.

I purposefully avoided the spoilers, they had nothing to do with it.
The high expectations came from the fact that all the other villains were great characters.

Even minor villains like the diamond dogs, Diamond Tiara, Trixie and Gilda was better, way better in fact. I hear Trixie is returning, I hope they don't ruin her, she has a lot of fanart, and I even made a big one of her myself as part of a commission, [link]
