I have signed it as well. All I do to my youtube channel is play piano which I believe do not need an age rating but, if they make this unjust rule law, I would have to go to jail for life.

I know! Petition signed and my essay is being proofread and fact checked so it is ready to be sent to the FTC as I type! Creators, big and small, need to stand together. We can and will make a difference. The COPPA laws, despite it's good intentions, are too broad and will only cause more damage then good.

It starts with making everything "kid friendly" or "safe", ends with total censorship except for "approved" stuff

Here is my take on the story. Someone has put up a dirty youtube video and forgot to rate it as R, so an underaged kid saw it which caused trouble. Instead of fining just the person that made that mistake, all of youtube has put up a harsh rule. Every youtuber must mark their videos as for kids or not for kids or they will be fined $4,000 for each video that has been marked incorrectly, which is vague at best. My problem with that is, all I do on youtube is post videos in which I play musical instruments which should not need to be rated. So I am afraid of posting any more videos, I might be fined so much that I would have to rob multiple banks so that I can get out of jail before I go to the next world.
If you think that is bad for the hobbyists, it's much worse for those that make youtube videos for a living.

I had canceled this week's piano upload and tried to rate all of my other general uploads as R...even though they really aren't. The problem is I can't rerate any off my old videos and I might go to jail for breaking an unjust law before it was written.
What you can do to help is sign petitions to stop this from happening and spread the word.

I haven't seen nearly enough content creators I watch make these videos, which makes me wonder if they even consider this a real problem?
Out of the videos I have seen you are the first to even mention animation, something i've been so worried about.

You tell me. All the alternatives I've found still need a lot of development and, sadly, since youtube is the most-well know video-focused site, the others don't even have many users. Honestly, I would like if DeviantArt made another site, dedicated to videos or something.

Vlare, Dailymotion, Vimeo are good alternatives. Not as great as Youtube, but sufficient enough

Good gods, censors are always trying to find ways to shut down content that their sheltered asses can't handle. Content warnings would be good to prevent some of the damage, but seriously, if there is a YouTube Kids already, why do we need this whole potential lawsuit in the first place? As a children's librarian, I am facing similar issues of censorship and hypocrisy at the core of my profession, both in the content I curate and the audience I am curating for. Quite often, I have to find things to assuage parents rather than worry about whether something will interest a kid or not; Mina and Daria's musings about this whole FTC debacle reminded me heavily of the struggle, and also made me immediately think of Hazbin Hotel, which is animated content MOST CERTAINLY NOT created with the enjoyment of children in mind.
