I totally know how you feel. I also do a lot of thoughts and planning into my own characters. They start of one way... Go through a lot of revisions... And then he/she comes out (sometimes not like I wanted to in the beginning but at least they aren't mary-sues). And it does take months! Maybe even years. And some of us do research. Yeah, we do that.

I shake my head at Mary-Sues. They're the reasons some people go "OC? Mary-sue!!!" I weep for the good OCs... I really do.

Great stamp. It always bugs me when people assume that all OC's are bad... since about 90% of what I draw/write is original fiction, that's like saying that nearly everything I make is complete and total garbage.

I know exactly what you mean,I usually will draw a sketch of a new OC in five minutes, then I'll spen the entire day thinking of the character and refining it.My favorite OC I have,I've had for over 2 years, and he's just now becoming a whole character.Because now,I think I have his whole character figured out.

KooboriSapphire In reply to ??? [2010-05-10 17:13:17 +0000 UTC]

I've made OCs in just a few hours & I put a lot of thought into them. And yet, apparently they're still called Sues. IDK what the hell is a Mary-Sue is or what doesn't make one. In other words, the character would have to be completely human for it not to be a Mary-Sue. And I fucking HATE humans.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ChibiGem In reply to KooboriSapphire [2010-05-11 23:14:05 +0000 UTC]

I havent seen your OCs so I can't really be the judge of that. If people are claiming that they're mary sues then try giving them a few more flaws. Also, google search "the mary sue test" and try taking that. I would link you if I wasnt on my mobile (:

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KooboriSapphire In reply to ChibiGem [2010-05-11 23:24:54 +0000 UTC]

Well, I'm not so good with all that stuff, I barely know what a flaw is as well. Mind if I note you some of them?

No, sorry, I refuse to take that test. The last time I took it, my character scored a 58! This here [link] explained perfectly well why that test sucks & why nobody should bother taking it.

KiwiKoli In reply to KooboriSapphire [2016-02-21 04:18:29 +0000 UTC]

A flaw is a bad thing about your character.
For example, an oc that's clumsy, overweight, ect ect

I agree with this stamp. I have FILES on some of my major characters, which are in stories I've written. (one was even published).
You know you have to think deeply about your OC's when you create their quirks, faults, likes/dislikes, medical histories, what their families were like, nationalities/bloodlines, etc. As I TRY to keep my OC's realistic (to an extent...some of them are fantasy) and feasible, I find it's quite fun.

How does someone make an OC in five minutes? A sketch or a prop, sure, but an OC?

Silly quips aside, nice stamp. I know the feeling. It's not a pleasant one. XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ChibiGem In reply to Cheshire-Shadow [2009-12-13 00:08:27 +0000 UTC]

There are actually several OCs with no thought put into them at all. Maybe the werent thought up in five minutes but they dont have much thought put into them at all. Sorry for any spelling errors btw im using my mobile phone

Cheshire-Shadow In reply to ChibiGem [2009-12-13 06:15:37 +0000 UTC]

It's fine, I don't really mind. My thoughtless OCs are normally used as mooks or red-shirts so that doesn't really matter. As for your mobile phone, I don't mind at all. Thank you for telling me.

ChibiGem In reply to Cheshire-Shadow [2009-12-13 07:14:26 +0000 UTC]

Yay! I'm back on my pc! The only OC's I don't put that much through into are the non important ones or the ones that only show up in the story once. Other than that I plan my OC carefully. Like it's my child. Except I don't want children so I'll just make OC's for the rest of my life

EchoesOfAnEnigma In reply to ChibiGem [2013-08-10 04:42:08 +0000 UTC]

I agree with what you're thinking completely!  I think it's really important to put a lot of thought into your characters.  You want them to be their own individual, to become like a real person to you and to your reader.  I have OCs that I've had floating around in my head for probably 10 years or so and I'm still working on them.  My main one right now I've had for probably 2 years and I keep tweaking him all the time.  Oh well.  That's just my opinion.

Oh I agree with you too about not planning to have kids.  Dogs and OCs will be my children!
