Update - August 2014thank you everyone for the continued support and use of this stamp over the years and for making it one of the most popular OC related stamps on this site. i'm glad you like it and please, feel free to continue to use it.

I also hate that. I put work into and constantly rework them. I try to put limits on them to prevent them from being overpowered and give them weaknesses, etc....I even wrote a journal article on this topic and my views and opinions on the subject. They many be somewhat new but I still try to follow most of rules to have them fit canon wise unless it is an AU.
The problem with most Mary-Sue tests that they don't account for how each series my have different rules. Example would be that natural pink hair might be o.k. for one series but would be considered a mary-sue because it would assume otherwise. A lot it depends on what series is created for as what many work for one won't work for another.

That's sorta me. I'm trying hard to develop my OCs. In fact. My favorite character Piwi gotten a lot less godly than her Mary-sue startup. Sorry if the stuff below is a bit long.
I'm even having an entirely new bit of her bio up later stating Piwi was created to be a perfect fighting girl but in reality turned into an energetic but very short tempered girl with a very huge sense of pride. But considering she never has a strategy during fights and just straight up charges at people. Piwi tends to be very predictable and many of her clasemates can easily read her attacks and can easily counter. Even Violet. Whose pretty much basically the most finicky of my OCs tend to beat her easily. She also has SEVERAL weaknesses I plan on giving her. Such as.
- Lacking in anything but physical attacks and close range combat. Making her virtually incapable of fighting ghosts and gives a huge disadvantage against long range fighters.
- Being completely incapable of swimming and has a huge fear of flights.
- Spewing annoying one-liners at the slightest chance
- Being completely childish and throwing tantrums after losing.
- Having a backpack with wings that generally send her flying uncontrollably everywhere. Often with her hitting either a plane. Or a nearby sign once she activates it. Which makes her generally not use it.
- Having the attention span of a seagull.
- And did I forget to mention her huge tendency to NOT use strategy. Making even what she was designed to do hard for her.
- Being given to two talking birds. A purple quail. And a green phoenix who tends to accidently burn things in PTA meetings. This isn't a weakness. It's just a standing point of how weird my OCs parents can get....
- Her sense of pride that gets in more trouble than she can handle. Often ending up with getting herself killed at least two times in a row at the most. If the series in my head wasn't built on the whole "death is a slap on the wrist" thing and everyone's ghost can generally poof up a new body. If I ever made a comic series. Piwi would be dead in the very first few fights.
I might change a few things. The only problem is. I just can't really decide on what personality to give her. That's the main problem with my OCs...

I am no expert thought, but I can try. That is very good that they have flaws and weaknesses, people are able to relate to characters better than way and seem more human (well, unless they aren't supposed to be human). Having fears also helps them seem more human. Try to pick fears that makes sense and show that fear if that every comes up (sometimes people forget about
fears and weaknesses of their characters. I order to really have it work, people need to not just write in bios, but use it/show it/talk about it if needed or situations comes up).
A good personality for her seems to be a bit hotheaded and impatient. Her short attention span can stem from her impatience. She seems like she would be very determined and competitive. I hope this helps a bit.

heck ive spent 2 to 5 years on some of my oc's

All I did was draw a wolf with a sweater and later added a red ring around its eye and called it "Moon"

I usually get my OC from a dream, or I sketch how character looks and my mind wonders from there. When it comes to making the personality, it could take months as I like to think and change things. None of my good characters are little-thought. Like my most adored OC... There is always situations I see that I may have to change something or change.

I'll admit to creating Sues, but I wasn't aware of the fact that they were Sues. Anyway, I'm now working hard to fix them.

Same here but mine aren't so sue that they need serious fixing. I am not sure if they are sue since they flaw but not serious flaw.

I don't spend months on them like you do, but I WILL say that I don't come up with them in 5 minutes. Even after I wrote them into stories, I'm still trying to tweak them to get the bugs out.

Yeah, alot of people assume Oc's are pretty much random drawings without any though put into it at all, or its a coppy of a cannon character. Not true at all! I love the stamp!

I write about my OCs then i feel like drawing them on my own paper, and since i'm too retarded to use my scanner, i just use bases!
All i have is Mircosoft Paint and I know that it can be used really well, but i try my best with it and i hope that my OCs turn out to look at least like it wasn't done in 5 seconds! They're really important and I kind of hate it when no one cares...

Well, I personally take the idea, write about it, and develop it as I go. Tema was really MS when I started, but now she's very well balanced. Once I can actually write about something, THEN I develop. Y'know what I mean? I spend forever thinking about and developing, but I gotta get my ideas out right away or they go away.

I like OC's that go into Original Fiction.
But I've only found a few(10% or something) oc's in fanfiction that I like.

They can also include female characters who are overly-badass/powerful, extremely flat and two-dimensional, or even overly-weak. "Mary Sue" can cover a lot of topics, really. Suffice to say, a "Mary Sue" can be an archetype/stereotype/cliche, and tends to not have a lot of thought or depth to the character.
