Description Here's a new tutorial from me. This is my method of extracting. I don't use vector masks, but it works pretty much the same way because i use paths too. But in this one i try to focus on how to extract the hair and make it look less "cut-out" and more natural. So enjoy the tutorial, and feel free to ask any questions. I hope i have'nt made it too confusing. ^^

Note: For the smudging part, it'll probably be easier to use a tablet. But you could do it with a mouse too. I used a mouse in my example here. Was too lazy to get my tablet out. xD

Please do not upload this tutorial anywhere else! However you can find it on my personal site if you prefer to download it there: [link]

very useful, Miso soup! Personally I rarely have the patience to do individual hair strands... also it's rare that I have a good quality image like that to work with! *vivid memories of editing screenshots*

thanks for the tut >3

And no probs. Glad you find it useful.

What if it's a woman with hair blowing in the wind? I've never extracted that kind of hair to my satisfaction before

chibimisao In reply to BlazingsNL [2010-02-23 08:10:57 +0000 UTC]

Yeah i've never tried that either. But i suppose you could still try the smudge tool, and smudge out in quick curved motions. Dunno if it'll work that well though. So i guess it's better to just use this tutorial on the same kinda hair type in my example. ^^

this is a great tut for anyone whos too lazy or doesnt know how to use vector masks (which can be a pain in the rear).. Ill make sure to point anyone who needs help in this topic to this deviation explains it so easily a caveman could do it..

Also how did you get that gradient to that shade split like that? i try gradients it always is a bad looking gradient when i do them

chibimisao In reply to coelphoto [2010-02-23 04:42:37 +0000 UTC]

Oh thanks! Glad to know it's easy to follow. ^_^

Hmm you mean getting the gradient tilted to a certain angle? You can get that effect my selecting the gradient tool and set the colors according to what you want, and then click on one point of your image canvas (i did it near the bottom right corner) and then click and hold to drag another point across your canvas (near the top left corner). You should get a nice tilted gradient. Or you can use the gradient fill tool. Go to "create new fill" then select "gradient". From there you can click on the gradient palette and adjust the colors according to the shades that you want. Then you can also adjust the angle of the gradient there. The "scale" option will determine the spread of your gradient. So if you want a smoother gradient, increase the number. But if you want the the shades to be more defined, then reduce the number. Lol hope that helps. xD
