I think that there is a scientific way to explain it's effects. A volitile film is present on the bubble, and reacts with certain mmaterials/chemicals found in metal, rocks, and plants. When it comes in contact with these specific compounds, it reacts, resulting in a dangerous explosion.
THAT is why it can be dangerous!

I find it can be fun to find scientific explanations to things. I have some others... but I could probably wind up writing a explanations to every move if I tried.
Now, the biggest question... if bubbles with an explosive film require a special gland for producing them... how do almost all pokemon have it? They may not learn it naturally, but the TMs would make it seem they genetically alter the host. D:
So many mysteries. :/

I think they're filled with some type of gas that explodes upon contact with oxygen, when the bubbles pop. Here's an example of a bubble attack. [link]
