Description Also a part of my Studio Arts folio on animal cruelty.

And I wrote this on it for the Top Arts application:
"This artwork was produced to address my feelings towards the unsuccessful relationship between animals and humans. To achieve this, I affiliated animal cruelty with child abuse, using a toy rather than a real elephant. The elephant is smiling when obviously it shouldn't be, and its clown-like clothing was added for a sinister feeling."

Another couple of important parts of this work:
- the chains go far off into the distance, creating a feeling of the elephant being isolated and insignificant
- the round area of light on the elephant was used to represent the spotlights you'd see at a circus
- the horizon was curved to represent the Earth, symbolising how we are hurting and disrespecting something that belongs here as much as we do.

This would have to be my favourite out of all my final pieces... it took me about 2-3 weeks to complete.

I love this drawing. The style and techniques you used kind of remind me of my style. I love it

The way you have chosen to represent your concept is original and really cool.

"When I was a kid, what I liked most from the circus were the animals, but the elephant was my favourite. They showed great weight and size and fantastic strength...but after the show and until a few minutes before going bck to the scene, the elephant was tied by only a chain to one of its legs to a tiny stake buried only a few centimetres in the ground. And despite that the chain looked thick and powerful it looked clear that an elephant capable of destroying a tree in one movement could pull out the stake and run away. The mistery was evident. What keeps him there? Why doesnt he escape?
When I was little I asked my father who answered that he didnt escape because he was trained.
Then I asked the obvious question: if its trianed, ๏ฟฝwhy do they chain him?
I dont remeber someone giving me a coherent answer to that.

Time passed and I forgot the mistery about the elephant and the stake, and I only remembered when I heard of some circus coming. With some more years I found out that someone was wise enough to find the answer:
"The circus elephant doesnt escape because he has been tied by a stake since he was very little, very little..."
I closed my eyes and imagined the little elephant just born, tied to a stake. Im sure that in that moment he pushed, pulled, pushed and sweat trying to free himself. And despite all effort he couldnt. The stake was certainly to strong for him. Im sure he slept tired and next day he tried again, and the next day, and the next day....
Until one day, terrible for his history, he stopped trying, and accepted his impotence and resigned to his destiny.

That enourmous and poweful, that we see on the circus, doesnt escape because he believes, poor, that he cant.
He has some register and memories from the impotence he felt short after being born, and whats worse is that he has never asked or tried again if he could do it."

This is amazing!
And all the little things, like the circus spotlight, make it even more important for me...

thank you so much for your comment. I appreciate it.

I really must commend you for choosing animal cruelty; it's a very interesting, difficult and emotional topic to explore. I'll definitely have a look at your work and give some constructive criticism. Best of luck with all your studies.
