And a baby is born! This is such a long awaited babe and I finally decided I couldn’t keep waiting for myself to finish the storyline leading up to this. So for now, this is the previous image and story: www.deviantart.com/chihuahua44…

This is the baby from Phest Evil by BonBonBerry  and this little bebe will be unbelievably loved.

Her story begins here, in the most unfortunate of settings:

It was a freak storm. Even the weather report didn’t fully predict the storm’s severity. First came the freezing, sleety rain, with its cold sting. Then came the wind, blowing the rain sideways with an almost intentional force. Limbs flung from their trunks and thudded onto roofs and littered the fields. The heavy wooden door ripped from Miru’s grasp and slammed open, making her flinch. A plastic bin rolled past her on a mission and Miru pulled her jacket closer around her body. She wrestled the door closed and stepped out into the wind, bracing against the rain spitting across her face like tiny bullets. She grumbled under her breath, plodding slowly and carefully across the yard towards the stables. Then suddenly, like a ghost, something large rushed past her. Miru stumbled back, feeling her heart rate spike and her legs go tingly; fight or flight was kicking in. Another blurr went wizzing past and this time Miru could make out the thudding of hooves over the pounding sound of destructive storming. “SHIT!” she said out loud.

Since Miru had returned from her long time away she had been living at the small house on the property. Stephan had built himself a small but much nicer home further down the driveway on the property and had agreed to let Miru live at the old house on the terms that she worked on it when she had time. This had been a godsend for Miru when she had returned, but suddenly she was wishing this was someone else’s problem. Unable to identify who was even loose and how many and where they were headed, Miru jogged the rest of the way to the barn. She wrestled out her phone from her sticky, soaked jacket and tried to wipe some water from her phone’s screen on her jeans, which were also soaked. “Shit,” she grumbled again, trying to hit the right buttons in the darkness, feeling the pressure as yet another body rushed past at speed.

Finally, she got Stephan on the phone and sent out the SOS. He promised to be right over and before Miru had even gathered some halters and buckets with grain, Stephan was stumbling into the barn. He shrugged off his hood and got right to helping, “How many are out?”

Miru squinted at him, unable to hear him, as a large thud on the roof made them both jump.

Stephan tried again, yelling this time, “How many are out?!”

“I don’t know!” Miru yelled back. “Several at least!”

Stephan clicked on his flashlight and then both stood and squared their shoulders at the barn entrance, pulling their wet jackets tighter around them, before plunging out into the darkness. They made their way to the paddocks first where a few newer horses were trotting anxiously along the fence lines, snorting and calling out. All gates were latched. Stephan pulled on each one as they passed, shining the light into each paddock. Miru tried not to get blown over. A figure rushed past and Stephan flashed the light at it, brown fur flashing into view briefly and then disappearing into the distance. Miru gasped as she recognized the coat and Stephan called to her, “It’s Kumara! The mare field!”

They both jogged there, then paused in confusion: the gate was latched. Miru said in normal tone, “She’s pregnant. What if something happens to her?”

“We will find her, I promise,” Stephan responded, shining the light down the line. They both noticed the giant tree branch laying across the fence at the same time. Miru pointed at it and they made their way over. The rain suddenly settled into a soft drizzle and both people sighed without consciousness. They surveyed the broken fence, which was truly smothered under the weighty wood of the branch.

“Well, lets start looking for the mares then?” Miru asked.

“Yes, lets-“ Stephan was cut off by a large gust of wind followed by the worst downfall of rain. “We gotta get back! Regroup!”

Before they had even taken a step toward the barn, they were suddenly plunged in pitch black. Stephan slammed the flashlight against his hand. Miru reached into her pocket for her phone but it was somehow off, the screen unresponsive. The fear sunk in then and Miru said, “Ste-Stephan?! What do we do?!”

“We just walk forward, toward the barn light!” Stephan was suddenly beside Miru and he put a hand on her shoulder and they aimed themselves at the glowing light in the distance, and began a slow trudge onward.

By the time they reached the barn, Dusty was standing there, his truck parked close. “What the hell is this?!” Dusty exclaimed, stepping aside to let the pair in. Miru was shaking violently, her hair pressed to her head and her eyes panicked.

“Kumara is out, all-all the mares are out,” Miru stammered. Stephan roughed up her shoulders trying to warm her, though he was just as drenched and cold. Dusty pulled Miru to him and gave her a big squeeze and didn’t let go, and Miru didn’t resist, maybe because she didn’t have the energy to.

“It’s too rough out there now,” Stephan said, more to Dusty. “We have to wait for it to die down.”

Dusty nodded in agreement, “Those mares are tough. Most are endurance horses, built for the wilderness, they’ll be fine.”

“I want to wait here for them,” Miru said, wiggling free from Dusty’s grip.

“Well, at least go get changed into something dryer,” Dusty suggested to them both.

Miru refused to leave her post at the edge of the barn, so Stephan drove up the driveway to his house and got dry clothes for himself and for Miru. Back at the barn, Miru changed in a stall into the baggy but oh so warm clothes and all three of them pulled out hay bales to wait out the storm.

It raged on through the night, until early morning when it died off as suddenly as it had appeared. Dusty and Stephan had dozed off, so Miru ruffled them awake.

“Okay,” Dusty said, stretching. “Let’s split up and start looking.”

“Look!” Miru interrupted. Out of the foggy fields a figure appeared. Then, as their eyes adjusted, or perhaps as the fog moved on, more began to appear. All the mares, it seemed, were out in the large grass riding track, grazing contently.

“Well, that made the search easy!” Stephan remarked, gathering lead ropes and halters, and handing them to the others as if he were arming them before a battle.

“But,” Miru’s eyes were scanning the field intently. “Where’s Kumara?”

They wandered out to the field, each haltering and leading as many horses as they could. Then Miru saw her. Only she wasn’t alone. Standing unsteady and muddy beside her was a tiny dark figure. Miru couldn’t help the gasp that escaped her lips.

“Look,” Dusty pointed at the mare and foal. Then remarked, “What awful timing for a birth!”

Miru didn’t answer him but handed him the lead ropes of the mares she had gathered and approached Kumara on her own. The mare lifted her head from the grass and approached Miru as she always did in the pasture. Miru rubbed the mare’s wide forehead, and the tiny foal came up to her and sniffed at her clothes. “What a beautiful baby,” Miru cooed softly. “What a good girl, Kume.”

Watching from a distance in awe and happiness, Dusty said to Stephan, “Kinda looks like devil horns on her face, doesn’t it?”

“Don’t even say that,” Stephan warned. “We don’t need another Kumara.”

Once they were all gathered and put back, Kumara munched on hay and glared menacingly as they all got to know the new filly. Thankfully, the soft foal was gentle and curious and friendly. And even more thankfully, Kumara was not all that interested in being an overly protective mother, giving everyone time to love on the filly they named Prim.
