Description
quick-ish painting before spring semester starts tomorrow, woohoo!!my first piece i'm sending up for critique request. here's to learning from my mistakes ^^
EDIT: finished an edited version of this. tweaked the size of her head and added some small details that were bothering me.
lessons learned from this piece and critique: it's easy to dive in and get to the part of painting you like best, but don't neglect the very basics.
thanks

First, this piece is very lovely! It's an overall balance of simple yet contains captivating details (such as the eyes and lips), which are elements of good design, and I always say, all good artists are designers as well. The color harmony is executed very well here, go go complimentary colors! Also, I feel that your super smooth painting works very with your style. It's realistic elements cooperate well with the non realistic and makes this perfect balance of unique and quality art.
As for the critique portion, as I do love hair with volume, I get this illusion that the back of her head is a little large? But it may be just her hair, perhaps it could be tweaked a bit. Maybe have that side of her hair flow a little more upward? The neck could use a little fine tuning in definition, but only slightly because I can see you used a technique to give the illusion of depth. (Kind of like with her arm going into the shadow.) Also, looking more closely, I get a slight conflict with her shoulder (the one that's in the light) and how it's connected to her neck, might be a tangent from her shirt makes it appear that way. Hard to tell. But that's all I can see right now. Still a gorgeous piece.
Again, you have a brilliant eye for color coordination. I really love the different tones used in the shading and I love the fact that you don't over do the shading. The satin type finish is very beautiful in my opinion. You totally avoid muddy colors or overly glossy art, and I applaud you for going above and beyond.
I look forward to many more of your works! Talent like yours is truly a gift to be shared. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s⦠" width="15" height="15" alt="

This also reminds me that I need to start painting again. >,<

Glad I could be of some help. I tried to use the critique skills ("sandwich critique") and knowledge from art school, however it can get tricky to critique well because artists who have a uniquely developed style and are clearly experienced shouldn't get any misleading critique that would interfere with the scope of the design. One element can break another if too much change is made, or something is missing etc. I enjoy critique and I wish more people on DA would actually give it. Sandwich critique is the easiest method of critique to give without sounding like an ass lol.
