Honestly, I used to cut myself. So this came from gashes on my leg.
Now when I paint with blood, I use menstrual blood.

Whenever I first saw your comment, I replied as another comment on my picture. (Sorry, about that. I am a little new to deviantart, but I am now getting used to this website.)
Within the first week I painted this it was still bright red and glossy but then the painting darkened to this color. I keep it protected in the shadows of my portfolio so it has not faded or changed much since.

Good stuff. It's an interesting process and sometimes the best tones come from selective exposure to sunlight.
