Description
Nana teaches an insecure clone how to make tea.A little crossover with Artoveli The boy, Tertio, or 'the third Edsel' ,belongs to her.
I'm super happy with how the coloring on this came out. I've been playing with a more 'painterly' look. Mostly because I am now obsessed with the 'gouache' brushes in Clip Studio.
Nana Tertio into a kitchen that looked more at home in some woodland hut than on a starship. Drying plants hung from the ceiling and a big, heavy looking wooden table that looked like it could easily seat ten loomed on one side. There was already a pot of boiling water on the stove. Nana pointed to a potted plant with yellow flowers in the corner. "Four flowers. One leaf." She instructed, then pointed to the pot.
Tertio, a bit overwhelmed by the fascinating smells and unexpected sights of this alien kitchen, didn’t quite catch exactly what she said. He stepped up to the flower pot and examined the flowers. They looked like oversized buttercups, and the leaves looked kind of... salady.
Had she asked for flowers or petals? He made an executive decision and pinched off four petals, and then four full leaves. “Just... drop them into the pot?”
He received no response, so in they went. Nana seemed to be busy elsewhere in the kitchen.
She peeked into the oven for a moment. Then sniffed the air and her eyes squinted. She pointed at the boiling pot. "Four flowers, one leaf." She repeated.
“O-Oh!” Tertio ran back to the flower pot, found the flower he had stolen the petals from, plucked it and four others from the plant and dumped them into the water. Then he looked around frantically for something he could use to fish the extra leaves out with. He found what looked like a tuning fork standing up in a spatula-pot nearby, and started digging in the pot. It was extremely hard to see through the steam, and the tuning fork wasn’t very well suited to the task. Finally, he got all four leaves out in a pile on the counter and heaved a sigh of relief.
She sniffed again and it was clear she could tell it wasn't right. "One leaf in. One flower out." She seemed determined to make him do it right.
“Huh?” Tertio whipped around to look at the leaves on the counter. “Did I--” He spread them out and counted. “Agh!” He picked one up and dropped it back into the pot, then went in with the tuning fork again, this time for one of the soggy flower heads. “I’m sorry...” He said into the steam. “I did warn you.” When he finally caught the flower and had it out on the counter, he turned around. “At least this isn’t strictly a me thing... Any one of us would have done just as bad.” He slid his hands down his sides, searching for pockets that weren’t there, and wound up just kind of holding his arms in a loose, embarrassed sort of way.
"Nervous?" Nana asked as she opened the oven and sprinkled something inside.
Tertio grimaced and shrugged awkwardly, looking around. “Just don’t like messing up... Uh, what, what are you making?” He asked, hoping to divert the conversation.
In answer Nana pulled out a tray from the oven and put it on the heavy table. On top were little savory smelling pastries about the size of a hot pocket that had little brownish bubbles amid what could have been a greenish rock salt. "After dinner, before bed." She pointed to a cupboard. "Cups for tea."
Tertio leaned over the tray. “They smell awesome! What’s that green... salt? Sugar? Er, something else?” Then he remembered the cups and went for the cupboard she indicated. Opening it up, he was faced with the sort of bizarre assortment of mugs, cups and glasses that usually grace the kitchen of any large family. Near the front was a mug with four hearts and the word “mom” written twice. That one was probably Kit’s. Or, maybe Nana’s?
“Do you have any kids?” He asked, as he started pulling out various mugs and setting them in a line on the counter.
"Vico leaves. Salty. Yum yum. Very good." Her ears dipped slightly at the question. "Long ago. Long long ago."
Tertio's back was turned to her, so he didn't see the slight wilting of her ears. "What about grandkids? You remind me of my Nanna, a bit..." Now it was his turn to wilt a little.
"Nana far away?" She asked, without turning.
“Ummm... She’s gone.” Tertio looked up at the ceiling, trying not to cry. Why had he mentioned Nanna!
Nana nodded slowly. "Children gone too. But new children. Captain, blue boy, stupid slug, dumb bird, fluffy glow eyes. New children, new family new life. Okay."
“Yeah... new family for me, too.” Tertio wiped his sleeve across his face and sniffed quietly. “Uh, so, how many cups, do we need?”
